Player stats, sales, and reception speculation thread

No, but everyone expect it tomorrow, especially considering RtR was promised to be released till the end of September.
I'm fairly certain that the vast majority of Civ VII players aren't aware of this information. In fact, I’d bet that even many members of this forum didn’t know it. Very few people follow Civ VII news so closely that they’d hold off on starting a game just because they expect a patch to be announced — not even released, just announced.

Now that a patch has been announced and seems to be coming next week, we can observe player numbers to see if there is a meaningful decrease.

Nothing about the patch details seen so far seem to signal a major change (thus less of a reason to hold off on playing). Further, it actually seems like a smaller patch in my eyes, and seeing that it's coming next week, that is more than enough time to get through a few games of Civilization VII.

I feel like people are missing the "much more" mentioned in Sar's post, but I appreciate if you can't see something, assuming it's there is a risky game.

Let's see how the full notes shake out. New map types are always welcomed (even if I do nothing but choose Huge Pangea).

We definitely need the full notes before fully passing judgement. However, it would be strange if the marketing team chose to "bury the lead" by concealing more exciting or more meaningful updates in an announcement which is purpose-built to create excitement.

But yes! Excited for the full patch notes. Depending on when they release the patch and second half of RtR, I am guessing we are looking at Tuesday, September 30, or Thursday, October 2.

They're going to use Gandhi in a big marketing push, probably in line with major changes. Expect a lot of suspicious reddit posts, "I didn't like Civ 7 before but Gandhi is so awesome all my friends bought the game now."

Outsode of a small group of enthusiasts like us (people active on a forum literally called Cov Fanatics) how much of the playerbase is actually tracking development closely enough to care about what’s in an upcoming patch?

I mean modders and people playing with mods will, since patches often break mods, but again how much of the playerbase is that?

I know when I boot up 6, there is little news snippets about Civ stuff (mostly 7) telling me that DLC and stuff is coming, but I can’t recall if patches are also announced there, since THAT is a primary “news” source for non fanatics

I'd argue the primary news source most non-incessantly online people actually engage with is social media.

The same announcement we got here, also gets posted to various other platforms (nevermind the official Discord, which has a wider fit than just CFC members).

Hard to tell who's actually tracking what, though. What are we trying to measure with that kind of data? Just engagement?

I think someone was trying to figure out if people waiting on a patch to come out effects player numbers, like people might wait to start a new game till after the patch, hence a dip.

I think waiting for a patch is probably the wrong way to think about it. I reckon people just play other stuff until they get a notification or something that the game has been updated, then decide to check it out.

Yeah, the people waiting for a patch tend to already be invested (for good or bad).

Very true. For me often the primary concern, since I love to mod/install mods for the games I play, is “what mods will this break”, but that just proves your point.

The UI improvements in particular look solid. I'm sure there will be a big bump post release. Hopefully it will translate into a permanent new, higher plateau 2-3 weeks post release. That will be the true test of how well the patch did. Fingers crossed.

The UI improvements, along with the new content, will certainly increase the player count in the coming days. However, even more important would be a more positive trend in the game’s reviews. Let’s see how it goes.

It seems it is already higher than it was a week ago on Saturday.
Higher peak than the past 2 Saturday's, although those were the 2 lowest Saturday peaks since release.

It also looks like Endless Legend 2 has had no impact on the Civ VII player count.
