While this is all I wanted from the beginning, currently there is a lot of skepticism in me and I see highly possible scenario that it will turn out as some sort of Frankenstein-like version of civ. Not closer to buying after this news hit, but I'll be watching.

But it feels like strong 180 course correction. Sort of stopped expecting this some time ago, but I guess they are forced to consider this.

Was expecting that maybe free weekend will hit on Winter Steam Sale, but now I assume it will happen only when they'll release "classic mode", so next year most likely.

EDIT. part of initial opinion striked-through since later I realized that I fell into a trap of overwhelming positivism of announcement in the link and thought that they are going full "classic mode" direction. While playing single civ through hole game is quite positive thing, it's still far away from "all I ever wanted".

The news of some kind of classic mode has got me as excited as I was when the first teaser for VII dropped last year. I'm sure I'll be disappointed when more details emerge, but now - for the first time - I think I might eventually buy this game.

I am excited about changes to legacy paths, I think revamping those (whether specifically in light of classic mode or in-general to possibly make them more flexible) is what would get me to return the most.

Highly doubt its a classic mode, and its just that at age transitions you get the choice to keep your civ. I think this because they said they are working on age transitions and improving the keeping fo the civilization idenetity through civ changes. An extreme version of keeping your identity would be staying as the same civ, and you'd likely miss out on any unique units/buildings etc in the future ages

I believe they said they were looking at playing any civ in any era... Which is more than I was expecting.

Personally I don't want a classic mode but I do want the option for a more classic-adjacent experience. This is I suspect the biggest hurdle in that path.

Yeah I reread the notes and they did say play as a civ from any age. If it isnt a new mode then they will have to be delicate with how they handle this.

I think a lot of players, including me, wouldnt want to see the AI playing as America in Antiquity, without the option to turn that off.

I'd hope for multiple AI behaviour options myself... And it doesn't sound like civ switching is going away, just that it'll become optional. Hopefully we all get to have our cake and eat it!

I am surprised. I was wrong. It appears that they are going to stick with the development of this game after all. It will be interesting to see if they are going to eliminate or option out the end of ages for a continuous game or just allow you to keep your civ.

I only want to play a classic mode, but I hope it is just that: a separate mode you choose at the start of a game.

I might think Civ switching sounds rubbish but clearly a lot of people enjoy it so it would be pretty crappy to take away their game, essentially.

Besides, I want a mode where NO-ONE switches!

I don't know how they can implement classic mode with era reset mechanics. What about tech tree? And it will be a mess if some civlets change and other not.

They didn't mention anything about removing eras. And I still don't see it. Allowing all civs in all ages is a lot easier to implement than removing eras – across concept, design, and implementation. Removing civ switching going forward (i.e., keeping your civ into the next age) is fairly easy and straightforward for concept, design, and implementation. Allowing to start with modern civs is already a conceptional and design challenge, but seems rather solvable if players tolerate that it makes their civ weaker and more boring than starting with an antiquity civ (which they should imho – that's a very valid tradeoff). But removing eras requires basically a new game.

Its not a new game, not even close. You already have the engine, the combat mechanics, the units, the Civilizations, etc, etc

Removing Ages is more work than disabling civ switching, but it isnt a new game, not even close

It is a new game to those who prefer ages though.

In my mind all they have to do to get one Civ to play for the whole game, is give each Civ bonuses and or units that are applicable for each age. You could have an ancient unit, an exploration bonus, then maybe a modern unit and or bonuses. Yes, it will take time to implement such a change. But, I think it can be done.

That’s only a partial perspective though.

But yes, new game is probably hyperbole. Let‘s say it would be a completely different game.
