Playing Conquest game

When's the best time to start conquering. I rarely start destroying in the ancient age because i need to catch up in techs and spearmen can defeat most units easily other than UUs.
Knights and longbow men are good vs. pikemen but musketmen soon follow.
My favorite time to conquer is once i get cavalry, especially if i have a tech lead. They take care of pikemen easily and 2 or 3 can take out riflemen.
I also like tanks, because they easily take care of riflemen and infantry can be beaten relatively easily too, but the problem is that soon mech infantry comes in and they are a problem. Then theirs modern armor but they come too late if i involved myself in war earlier in the game, but otherwise they're the best along with some ICBMs.
IMO modern times are the best, but too late for me. If i plan to do a conquest on a large map with 11 other civs what should i do?

I like to stay at least a tech ahead of the AI, so:

I attack with Swordsmen until they get Pikemen
I attack with Knights until they have Musketmen
I attack with Cavalry until they have Infantry
I attack with Tanks until they have Mech Inf
I keep attacking with Modern Armor

Of course, that's provided the political climate allows me to be aggressive

I almost always conquer, so I have a lot of experience with this issue. If you have enemies on your continent, kill them as soon as you can. You need "breathing room" as Hitler said. After that, I wouldn't get involved in any major offensives until you've built factories. I know it's a long time, but when you start fighting you want to be able to keep it up and to win quickly. Build up your infrastructure with libraries, marketplaces, banks, universities, factories, and then you're ready to fight for the rest of the game. A good industrialized city can build a cavalry in two turns. Twenty industrialized cities build ten cavalry every turn. See my point? Waiting is hard, but it's worth it in the long run.

I alwas take over 1 civ before Musketmen are common (that is if they have them, but not yet built many I go on).

Aside from that I attack whenever I have an advantage. UUs are very helpful here, that`s why America sucks.....

Immortals and Legionaries are best, btw.
