Hey all, I may be new to the forums, but I play Civ a lot, and its one of a few game I really hang on to.

I always play warmonger, and I always use Monarchy and Communist for gouvernement.

I want to try something different, Democratic/Republic. But I can't get a old of it, it seems that I always pay too much for my army.

Can anyone of you give me a few pointer on how I should manage my civ while, using democracy and replublic? It would be very helpful!

Thanks in advance.

Bulid marketplaces and banks than convert to republic.I always use republic and not democrcy. This is my strategy but there may be better strategies

Personally I would not wage any lengthy type of war in Demo, short ones are OK. But as far as Republic goes, as long as you have the buildings Deo mentions above plus the stockmarket and wall street if you can get it, you won't be hit so hard with the cost of a sizable army, also don't forget, get all the Luxeries and happiness buildings you can get for the WW (Temples, Cathedrals, Coluseums) and any happines wonders you can get too!! I have been able to wage war for very long times with little effect in Republic under the right conditions.
GOod luck

If you are playing C3C, in Republic it is very important to get your cities to size 7+ ASAP to get the extra free unit maintanance.

You must change your type of play. Democracy is not for warmongers, it's more for builders ; you need to focus heavily on happiness and income if you want to wage a world war with your democracy...
So if you want to give a shoot at democracy, SERIOUSLY tone down your army. Start focusing on infrastructure instead. Once your cities are productive (bank + stock market + factory) and full of happy people (8 lux + marketplace + cathedral + police station + any GW promoting happiness) THEN you can start to look at your neighbour's borders :)

The trick is to remain alive while your military's weak ; but there's a great tool called diplomacy ;)

I never bother with Democracy. Even with police stations, the war weariness skyrockets. I'm not a warmonger, but every once in a while it is necessary to stand up for yourself. Republic seems to be the best compromise.

Democracy can be powerful in the hands of a warmgoer, if the person can deal with the happiness issues. Sure Facism can net you 10 free units per city, but think of this a size 20 democracy city yields 1 extra commerce per tile, giving 20 extra gold, which could equal 20 extra units paid for, then if you get a marketplace/bank/stockmarket combo, that is an extra 50 gold for you city. Of course you can use the extra money to tech up to more powerful weapons, and with all the extra cash, you can keep your people happy. War under democracy is hard, but for those who can do it, it can be very powerful.

New to the forums too, and I haven't run into any financial problems while in war. Mind you, I'm not much of a warmonger, I try to bulldoze through scientific advances, but recenty, Xerxes declared war because I wouldn't give him the secret of recycling.

So he came waltzing in with about 60 modern armors - probably the size of my entire army - and I detonated a few icbm's to wipe them out. I switch production to nearly all modern armor throughout my 40 cities - still no problem financing since I had smiths trading company and wall street - but the citizens were becoming more and more unhappy until they decided to overthrow the government (despite the temples, cathedrals, police stations etc).

This was a time I finally managed to push through and destroy some of his cities, but I nearly got owned during the anarchy stage because I couldn't replenish my army at a rate of 30ish units per turn.

So I would say democracy isn't a problem per se, but look out for a potential revolution if the war lasts too long.

Contact governor -> manage citizen happiness -> yes -> in all cities

revolution problem fixed :) Of course, as war weariness increases the governors will hire more and more entertainers, reducing your production and income, but for a while everything will be milk and honey and you can wage your war to its conclusion, sign peace, and your democracy will survive.

I already had it on manage citizen happiness. I never experienced any civil disorder for that matter, but all of a sudden boom, your citizens are not happy with your government.

Think the problem is the war lasted too long (and still lasting...). Persians had a territory twice as large as mine (now slightly smaller).

Play some variant games and you'll see there is no best government.
Yep, even Feudalism is good for FRFR games!

War Weariness only increase if you have troops in enemy territory in between turns.

I rarely ever wage war unless it is declared by others anyway (this also helps with happiness btw).

Also, it is actually "cheaper" to sustain really large armies under Democracy than under Republic (due to maintenence cost of 2 pr unit exceeding max allowed in Conquest).
