I am new to the game and have made rookie mistakes in some of my games and in others got unlucky. (Playing for science as Korea only to find there was a Nebuchanezzer finishing 3 wonders all 1 turn before i could (pyramids..etc)

In another standard game I fell behind to Russia on research. Catherine was flying over my troops when i still had Frigates and Caravels...She declared war and poof there i went.

If I do fall behind, how do i play catch up?

Focus either on growth and science or if you have good UU on warring the wonder whore. So in your Korea game you could have just tried to take his wonders.

Get your National Colege up asap, before t100 for sure. Beeline education while working high yield food tiles, then staff all ur unis. Next is Public schools and then labs, four tall cities focusing on growth and working specialist slots will easily out tech any AI up to deity. You might need to catch up at the beginning.

If you are in tight spot and AI is likely to win try to sneak in a diplo win, that's usually very doable as they won't compete for CS allies too hard.

If you want to see Maxym's advice in action I highly recommend Moriarte's Japan Deity Let's Play on youtube. It is basically a perfect example of how to accomplish a 4-city Tradition start with an Education beeline. At that point when he had caught up to the AI in terms of tech he could have won by any victory condition (culture would have been a bit more difficult) and he chose to beeline for artillery and win by domination. After watching this series (and other Deity series by Moriarte and others like Mad Djinn) and emulating what they do it should be easy for you to move up in game difficulty.

One trick I like to keep up my sleeve is to have the Oxfor university ready to build,
but dont build it right away, leave it as long as possible.

getting those free techs at the right time can make all the difference.
Dont have Flight or oil?
Pop Oxford and now you have anti-air guns. this has saved me from otherwise un-winnable wars more than once.

As far as Neb beating you to the wonders, he must have a better production city than you.
Capture it :)
(if you think he is a pain, what about Egypt?)

you could put a spy in his city and that might help you plan better.
Have you built the iron works nat.Wonder? I find its pretty important....

Great idea on the University. Didnt think of that.

I lost on turn 230 to nubucanezzer who just out paced me all game. Still learning.

New question:
How does Gandhi always seem to get such a fast start.

Playing as SIAM I thought i had a great opening.

3 Silver mines, 2 furs, 2 pastures 1 cotton and 3 horse tiles within the first 50 turns.
I rushed the Stone henge and founded Christianity with a Tithe and the faith +1 thingy for gold/silver. I have 3 CS next to me (within 15-20 tiles) Vatican (which is why I went for religion) Samarkand and Antananarivo.
I started Tradition, then liberty, liberty again for the worker, then tradition (landed elite) followed by Legalism.
my techs i feel like I have done well which have led to 1 turn from Oracle along with Mosque of Djenne

To the north I have Mongolia and to SE I have Gandhi with 2 cities.

Turn 50 he (gandhi) has a score of 268 to my 168 how is this possible?

How many cities? And how far from NC? Score is not important, could be wonders (good) or he is growing fast and settling fast (bad).

Mixing trad and liberty not a good idea except as Poland. As Siam you want tradition and early consulates, asap in fact. Scout like mad to uncover all CS.

How did you lose on t 230? conquest?

Yep conquest. He declared war with another AI that I was in hostile stages due to a fight over a city state and I had only 2 cities. Teamed up and he had more units.

Currently 1 city since I had thought the increased cost to culture would be too prohibitive. (still new to the game, only on week 2 of gaming) I can have a NC up in 6 turns.

With searching I cannot find Moriarte's Japan Diety Let's Play. Do you have a link?

If you're gonna do it from behind, you need a solid position to work on, and a friend. A nice neighbour can work. There is always the chance you can either bribe someone with gold or just give some luxuries to convince someone to do it with you. I recommend gems, gold or silver.
Before actually doing it you should think about the risk vs reward. There will be great pleasure from finishing for sure, but there is always that little risk that can actually lead to your death in the end.
Also; remember to prepare well in advance. There is nothing worse than getting ready to do it from behind just to realise you didn't bring the right tools for it. Be prepared well in advance! Checking out videos on the internet can greatly help you to get in the mood and give tactical advices, but can also be giving false promises on what is to come. Go in with an open mind and just let yourself go. Nature have prepared you for this moment, it rarely goes wrong.

Good luck son!
