I will update this post progressively

Started off with Random maps, picking greece, Reload the die every time, and pocketing culture (saving up for ideology spamming)

Going for diplomatic/ with threat of conquest.

Large map, epic speed, 10 civs 20 CS's.

Started off with a horse 4 tiles away, for my UU. Which I figured would be best upgraded to tanks. So at the cost of money, spawned a bit, and sent them out to get barbarian experience.

England (half way across the map) Must have gotten a settler on a ruins and tried to grab that little leg next my capital. I was trying to max culture area with my main.. as the resources around were beneficial enough wihtout having to spam settlers.

Built not bought my troops.

Ended up wasting all but two UU-tree on exploring and barbarian culture grabbing, had to justify the cost of maintenance. I couldn't help but to tech out my UU (which is an early replacement), I delayed it enough to get 4-6 units out early. But maintenance limited spamming buildings out of second or third city till later. (My second city built itself up, but I purchased a lot of buildings on my third city. So my first could wonder

I am teching up decent, and my spies are working great to compensate for the other side of the board. grabbed a few premium techs for less time it would have taken me, go to "bulb" a little bit. Although probably not what you guys mean. My great scientists come from wonders or something, it seems like I never get one. (Not sure how to generate Scientists without specialists)

I got a couple archer-tree in there somewhere. Not a lot of ruins maybe half dozen, and I did not get astronomy till late.

Pause for station identification

Actually gotta write down an idea for Hawaii...

Update 1

Down to two or three city state allies had 5 or 6 at one point. My lowest friendship though is good. and I dont loose any faith with some allies. I can will spam some allies with gold gifts before next election if there is something I want.

Whole world hates England now and everyone wants to be my friend. That is the country I chopped down to one city right in the beginning.

Byzantine above me but a I culture bombed to shut them out and disagreed to open borders early. Looked around at the risk of loosing units. (I did) But got a good idea for my expansion routes.

Japan was on the same land area as my main city, and built a small triangle of cities, and did not go Shogun on us.. Sweden was even nice after I declared war on it. (I never fought, just Agreed to DOW and they begged for peace later. Eventually they lost their capital to Dido.

Got some defensive pacts to keep trouble makers off my back, but so far level 5 seems a LOT easier than 4. Way less fighting.

Derailed thought

Hawaii island map, big as life, and spam for religion but NOT for sailing.

Get enough mineral strength to build some ships then go gold

Honor for culture for social policies then save for patronage.

Religion bumps for city state allegiance. save for ideology. Spy yourself out, risk war "My spies do what they want, I have no control boo hoo" they wont attack (you will have lots of units out there exploring so appear strong)

Diplomatic victory.

Just like my real games, that is where I fail. The middle ages.

Anyone have tips for improving my mid game? I got early figured out pretty good, but still have trouble figuring which wonders to shoot for, and no luck generating great scientists.

Generating GS is easy:
Build universities and run both science slots.

The normal wonder to shoot for as Greece is Forbidden Palace; Greece's UA makes it much easier to maintain city state allies.

The only wonder you really need is Forgotten Palace.

Finish Tradition if you are going for 4 or less cities, otherwise finish Liberty and in next game decide if you want to go Tradition or Liberty there is a very little point in going for both of those trees (unless you are Poland). You don't need that 1 point in Honour as well, you should be able to get enough culture anyway.

Get every science building in every city and fill the slots with the scientist, it should help with Scientist generation.

For diplomatic victory pick Freedom Ideology, cause with it trade routes to City States will provide you with bonus influence, making Diplo Victory very easy to achieve.

Good luck, commander!

About Greece and City states:
Has anyone tried autocracy / Gunboat diplomacy? its crazy good under the right circumstances.

Gunboat diplomacy seems weak at a first glance, but its benefits are superb if you can grab it early and reap the rewards. Parking a unit or two near any CS and gaining influence can grant all kinds of benefits once the CS start flipping into friends and allies. Its best to have lots of units and a modern army. but that ALWAYS good :)

I know most of us focus on autocracy happiness policies, but gunboat diplo gives happiness from city states (mercantile / lux) and well as all other CS benefits.

For Greece, it seems like a no brainer.

Freedom allows you to use you trade routes, or gift units. Autocracy lets you keep your units, and trade routes for whatever purpose(quests or just hammers or gold). build a big army and navy and take gunboat Diplomacy early and you should be able to combine regular quests and military unit placement to get tons of allied CS.

this strategy also help bankrupt other AI because they will try to keep the CS allied. If you declare war, your allies with help nickle and dime the AI as well as force them to do stupid moves with their armies.
