hi,
how do i build ports? i tried bringing my worker to the tile next to the river but it didnt work. i had researched maps and writing...also do i have to build an embassy in the capital of another civ to make them my ally???

You cannot build harbours on rivers. Only coast. And yes, you need an embassy to ally with them.

on the coast as well..i have tried it...brought him to the tile next to the coast but still i couldnt build the harbour

You need a coastal town at the sea(!). Cities on the coast of sweetwater lakes do not count. To check right click on one of the water tiles. If it has one food it is saltwater, if two sweetwater.

Your workers don't build harbors at all. It is a city improvement which is not needed for ships per se, it is only needed if you want vet ships.

Harbors allow vet ships and extra food on water tiles. They allow trade routes across water with the tech for the water tiles (sea/ocean).
