In ship combat against missiles, sometimes my ships will shoot at missiles, sometimes not. They will shoot at fighters. Has anyone else had issues with getting ships to shoot at missiles, and if so, what do you do about it?

Most of these ships are carrier task forces with some missiles on the ships, I mainly use "watch" mode in combat.

Never ever use watch mode in combat - always control.

Point Defence is ... ermmm... Buggy!
There has been much discussion in this thread called Visual Detection, also in this one here , and this one regarding Point Defense and Point Defense ships ...
Generally, I will steer clear of the PD ship type altogether and generally build LR/SR armada's with carriers and IF ships included. In most cases, the LR ships will be able to detect incoming missiles/fighters automatically.

Also, I'd advise you visit the Moo3 Strategy Forum and read all the stickies and most of the other posts for a more comprehensive look on what works and what doesn't.

You have a fair bit of reading in front of you...

Edit: you also may want to look at this thread regarding fans modding the visibility bug. It can be found here

Those are a lot to read. The detection one is interesting, changes possible planned ship designs. I have been using long range ships for point defense for carrier/missile ships, most of their weapons are designed for short range (meaning fighter and missile killing), and those threads explain some stuff I see. Still, I'll need to read around more to get some strategies.

Yeah there is a lot of reading to do there. I am still reading threads on that site and I have been lurking (and posting) since early 2004.

If only proper documentation was created/released by QSI and Fake-Atari, then we'd know how everything works. That, in fact, was promised by QSI/Fake Atari in late 2003 and still hasnt arrived and probably never will.
