Pointy Stick?

Beat up your neigbours, then get technologies out of them in exchange for a peace treaty. Works well in the AA, but after that the techs get too expensive to trade straight-up for peace.

While this is true, if you throw in some gold you can still get some pointy stick research done. Not as effective though, to be sure.

You have to hit them hard and fast. The AI has a very short memory and so sue for peace soon after taking/razing some cities. Taking their capital seems to be particularly effective.

Another form of pointy stick research is to renegotiate peace. Assuming that you have not got a 20 turn PT in operation, click on current deals via the F4 screen and select 'peace treaty'. The advisor will ask you if you are sure that you wish to renegotiate peace and with good reason; if you fail to come to acceptable terms you will be declaring war. However if you are much stronger than your rival, you will be able to extort cash, techs etc from them without losing any troops. It's worth trying if you are prepared to go to war if the 'peaceful' approach doesn't reap suitable rewards.
