How long does it last ? Some bastard poisoned my capital water supply and I've already lost 7 population points !!

They go for the same city over and over, station a spy.

I think that's speed specific. I play marathon and they last longer but every turn there is less unhealthy points. So it dissipates slowly until it's all gone.

Well, when you go to poison an A.I.'s water it says it will last for 10 turns (and I play marathon, so I'm guessing it would be shorter for faster speeds), so I assume its the same when they do it to you.

That sounds reasonable. I must have look at a city that had been hit twice in short order and missed that. Thank you for the correction.

I am suspect that the AI actually has the espionage points to keep doing this over and over again. These missions can be expensive in EP but they seem to be able to pull them off over and over again.

They choose the most random improvements to whack. I've got 32 cities and the AI sabotages a Town deeeeeeeep in the interior. Why? I've got a border city with a godawful amount of food and hills, a real powerhouse, and the AI hates it's one Watermill. Blew it up three times in a row before I put a Spy on it. Why? Damn curious creatures those AIs. :)

I took care of the problem by eradicating his civ. Now Gilgamesh doesn't poison Rome's water supply anymore !

I feel like I should hire a staff when I get into a big war ... I must be getting (Enkidu Warrior, Jan 2004)

So if I understand what you are saying, I could station a spy in all of my cities to increase the likelihood of catching any foreign spies before they do damage to me?

One of your own spies (or a security bureau in a city) increases your chances to catch enemy spies (you have a base chance and a spy increases this chance).

Note: Spy and bureau give the same chance and don't stack.

If you know where the spies come from (for example a certain road bottleneck) you could even station spies on those tiles (which they pass when they travel).
This would of course require a lot of spies as only tiles where the enemy spy ends his turn count, but in some late game scenarios I can imagine it.

Best method against poisoning water is increasing health cap / food surplus of that city.

I remember when I had this problem... created a security bureau in every city via whipping AND paying them, and did counterespionage, they couldnt touch me anymore :)
