Just announced by Gamefreaks and Koei: everyone's (least) favorite collect-em-all monster-catcher is crossing over with a...feudal japan strategy game?

I...don't know what to think of this. On the one hand, it could be serious geekgasm material (pokémon + feudal japan + strategy?). On the other hand, it's such an odd screwball idea for a game. Feudal lords fighting one another via...pokémon? It's not the thing you'd think of seeing merged.

The general reaction so far seems to be very much of the "What?!" variety.

Kind of sounds plausible given that both have a asian legacy. I'd give it a download if it were on Steam.

I'll have to see if Shogun 2 has this mod!!

Nintendo has a policy of only letting second parties (Such as Game Freak, who makes Pokémon) to only release on Nintendo platforms. Anyways, this game looks like it was designed for the handheld market.

Apparently for the DS; not the 3DS, the regular DS. Either way, I want it.

This makes me WAT!? even more. Although not everything needs 3D and you can play DS games on a 3DS too right?

Releasing on DS over 3DS allows a much larger market to get the game, which is a test genre anyway. This is sound business.

Since Koei is working on it, it might actually turn out decent despite the Pokémon. I used to play their games on the SNES (Pacific Theatre of Operations I and II were my favorites).

Although this comment is seriously -worthy: "Then it is the best thing Japan has ever created since Godzilla."

PTO II. Oh my god, I lost track of how often the video game rental place's copy of that game ended up lodged in my SNES. And I never really got far in it, but I spent all my time designing and ordering new ships.

A seriously underrated game, in my opinion. I've been playing recently, and it is still as addictive as ever.

I usually played through as the US starting from a week before Midway, since that was the most challenging scenario you could play as the USA. The AI doesn't conquer as fast, and doesn't even declare war on SE Asia in the first month, so typically Japan cripples itself in the opening moves on the '41 scenario.

Tokyo by end of summer in 1943 and sinking all the major capital ships is my record for a finished game (starting from the June 1942 date, so about 15-16 months of gameplay). I have gotten very lucky with sinking carriers in my current game around Gilbert, and I'm at Iwo Jima in December of 1942. I haven't lost one in my save, and since the carrier defeat the Japanese have been bleeding ships. I have a three-carrier task force (Enterprise, Yorktown, Saratoga) launching punitive raids on the Japanese home islands to attrite their air reserves, and invasion fleets with my other two (Hornet, Wasp) are taking the Philippines back.

Pokemon isn't decent? One of the greatest rpg games of all time combined with classic Koei strategy sounds amazing.

WTH? They do know Mewtwo was made in a lab right?

I have to agree with Luckymoose. Pokémon is about the only JRPG where you actually have to use strategey, especially in PvP. But even in single player, its more than "spam your strongest move"

Plus, the Koei games, as stated before, are epic.

Yeah! It was "switch to type advantage", then "spam your strongest move"! :gripe:

Having only played it during the Red/Blue days, I agree with Owen's assessment. Plus, as far as JRPGs go, there is some serious strategy in games like Chrono Trigger (and FFT until you get Orlandu). FF8 involves some clever trade-offs with the magic-junction system and limiting you to 4 commands. I gotta disagree with you entirely on the strategy point.

I also don't care for the cliche Japanese battle monster genre, the teenager-saves-the-world trope, etc.
