Pokémon: Nobunaga's Ambition (or, new contender for Weirdest Crossover Ever)

Having only played it during the Red/Blue days, I agree with Owen's assessment. Plus, as far as JRPGs go, there is some serious strategy in games like Chrono Trigger (and FFT until you get Orlandu). FF8 involves some clever trade-offs with the magic-junction system and limiting you to 4 commands. I gotta disagree with you entirely on the strategy point.

You made some good points, got to that statement, and proceded to destroy anything credible you might have tried to say.

Just. No. If you never watched Spoony's review of the game, one of his main points is how broken the battle system truely is. I'd suggest watching it.

Are we really going to pretend that my objection to Pokémon being the only JRPG with strategy hinges on whether you can exploit the FF8 combat system?

Okay...

Besides which, if we're going to go with breakability, considering that he last played in the Red and Blue era...

Mewtwo (or even Alakazam) spamming psychic pretty much meant "game over" in that game.

The strategy level in pokemon now has grown a lot, to be fair. The demolishing psychic took in Gold/Silver (introduction of a type immune to it and a type resistant to it), the splitting of special into special attack and special defense, the introduction of abilities in Ruby/Sapphire, the introduction of move slightly less powerful in raw damage but with much higher likelihood of side effects, and the great attack split (where the stat your attack use is now based on the attack itself, not the attack's type) in diamond/pearl have all made the game a great deal more strategic than it used to be. (Well, that and all those stats-worthy multi-type pairing...picking an electric to kill flyers will now backfire badly if you run into a Gliscor, for one)

The introduction of the Very Late Game battles in Black and White (Cynthia especially...there are only two ways to beat her: power-leveling, or fine tuning a team. I went the later part, and it required putting a lot of thought in strategy) had also made strategic thinking a lot more useful than it used to be.

I also don't care for the cliche Japanese battle monster genre, the teenager-saves-the-world trope, etc.

FF8 is honestly the same system as Pokemon with more cutscenes...

Oh my gods. This is the great combination I have ever heard of.

Just saying...

Ok. This game had better be released in North America.

There isn't even a release date for Japan yet but there was a vote on the level 5 Facebook page for which game should be released outside of Japan and this one so it is looking good.
Knowing how long both Prof. Layton and Phoenix Wright take to get out of Japan on there own i wouldn't expect it any time soon.

Holy mother of infant Jesus!

I want to go to there...

This is the greatest idea EVER. I haven't played any Koei strategy games (yet), but they sound pretty good. Still, a daimyo with Mewtwo? Coolest thing ever.

Even though I said I was done with the series after Platinium, I might have to reconsider this. It's certianly hilarious.

Platinum wasn't that bad.

Of course, my opinion is a bit skewed since the game gave me the Pokerus before I fought the first gym leader. :p

I would like to point out that there is a huge level gap between finishing the story and the very late game, and there's STILL no practical way to get your Mons to Level 100. The only time I have ever achieved such a feat was in Gold with my Typhlosion, and only then because I played Gold for a LOT. It was practically the only game I played for at least a year.

Also because GSC was more favorable than any other game before or after to a one-poke-team game.

Put me in the "OH BALLS I'M EXCITED" camp.

Mostly because I like brazen acts of strange.

Because the 3DS was totally designed by Sony, which is why it isn't backwards compatible.

The 3DS is backwards compatible? I just want it in 3d :p

I think forward compatibility is rather a lot to ask.

How is it forward compatibility if it's for the DS?

Huh? But the 3DS is back compatible?
