When they were making Civ 3, they forgot Poland.

I think they are an especially important nation in the modern era -- and should have a militaristic trait. Their unique unit should be the Polish Liberator, although some people might argue that they should be called Occupiers. But regardless, they're a pretty instrumental part of current events and, as such, history.

Don't forget Poland.

In the modern era, they have been...

- A great place for third parties to have a battle
- A vassal state of the soviet union
- A wannabe EU member

This isn't the kind of greatness I believe we are looking for. In the 16-18th centuries, it was different of course. Anyway, whats a liberator?

There is a complete Polish mod on the web somewhere. ( i have already downloaded it)
Their unique unit is the Winged Hussar (Hussaria) - a variation on Cavalry Unit.
Poland was an important nation in the 16-17th century.
At that time it was not really decided who is going to be the ruler of Slavic World: Russia or Poland.
And Poland waged several wars against the Ottoman Empire and Crimean Khan (tartars).
so, Poland is an option in the game, i would like to see them!!!!!

Hey Dh epic. I Was born in Dayton, ohio and I live in POland as a missionary and Your Idea is cool.

Hmm, I suppose they hit their stride more in the 17th-18th century, that's a fair point.

The real benefit is being able to use them for a full and accurate re-enactment of the Iraq War. Not just in a scenario, but in the actual game.

I wouldn't exactly consider the 18th century a good set of years for the Poles...

If you want to use them as a reenactment of the Iraq war why not just add them to the game like you can with any other civ? :p

Yeah, but I just think it's a travesty that they didn't include Poland in the game in its foundation. How could you forget poland?

Because they already included a number of European civs which have been more important historically?

I beg to differ. Why should we give two bits about Russia, or France, or Germany?

Honestly, France, Germany and Russia should be barred from the game in place of Poland.

the thought of having Poland ( my country ) in the game is a very very aluring concept, don't you think? After all, we do have alot of fans. What better way to capture their fandom by creating their civilization? Poland did play a hefthy role back in the day, but so did Australia, Canada, and Cuba.

Do you guys really think we need more civs? I'd gladly throw away some civs to bring in a cooler system to deal with the AI. I'm getting tired of those heads loitering everywhere.

In all sincerity, I am definitely of the point of view of the more the merrier.

I think the Poles belong in there, along with a few other key Eastern European nations.

The problem is variety. If you have, say, 32 civs, what's the point? Sure, Poles and Serbians and Romanians will probably be pleased, but unless there are stark contrasts between Civ #12 and Civ # 35 then there's no point in including so many civs. At their core, each civ is simply a set of values. There are only so many values that can be changed in order to create something unique and interesting. Not only that, but each of those civs will have to be balanced. In the end, I believe it comes down to "more work than its worth."

All you need for a civ is:
 • attributes
 • a leader head
 • a unique unit
 • a real civilization to base them on
That being said, Canada

is way way way more deserving of a spot in the game than Poland.

They should also have Mexico, Cuba, Italy, Pakistan, Vietnam, Australia, Inuit, Huron, The Huns, Isreal, Congo, and Polynesia.

And they'll all be the same and people will still pick the same 5 civs, either because they're historical favorites or because they're the best gameplay-wise...

Well I like the three traits idea with 56 combinations for different civs. A little bit of effort balancing good unique units with poorer trait combinations would even things out. As for people picking their favourites thats their own choice, but I think playing the same civ over and over gets boring real fast. :hatsoff:

I already explained why that's a bad idea in that thread.

Instead of the traits being unique, you'll have a great proportion of the available civs that have them, making it seem "who cares?" what civ you play since they're all pretty much the same anyways. You have more combos, but they're more similar than they used to be. Even now Civ 3 suffers from the problem of civs being relatively similar, some being more powerful than others and some being completely useless (how many fans of Korea or India are there?).

Either A) have a limited number of civs or B) expand the differences between civs much beyond what currently exists in Civ 3, otherwise more civs will be DETRIMENTAL to the game, rather than adding to it.

Anyway.
If Civ4 is is intented to be a ambitious and exigent game then they should put in Poland with all the work it needs (mainly graphic work).
I do not expect Civ4 programmers to include Poland in the epic game, but in a scenario it would be really great. For eg. "The Deluge" or something like this... (Poland, Brandenburg,Sweden,Russia,Turkish and Tartar)
Someone tried to make a scenario similar to it, and i think Steven nicknamed guy converted many units from the GSC Cossacks game.
so, i can't help thinking that creation of such a scenario is not toooooo difficult.

kisses

I don't see how limiting the civs makes the game better for anyone except lazy programmers and developers.

That is the point. With only the 4 items I listed above, civs are very easy to create, and people will like playing with their favourite civ. The game would be better for me if it came with Canadians. dh epic would like the game better if it had the Poles.

I do agree with you about expanding the differences though. They could give each civ a unique improvement* and give each civ a negative trait. If balanced with a bit of care, it would add a lot of subtle differences to the teams.

*damn good idea if I do say so myself : )
