Polish Civ

Being of the Polish persuasion, I noticed the glaring absence of what was once the largest empire in Central Europe. So here's my solution - a Scientific/industrious Civ having the Husaria (a medieval cavalry unit) as its SU.

Here are the basics:

Civilization: Poland
Bonuses: Industrious & Scientific
Free techs: Bronze Working & Masonry
Title: King
Name: Casimir (or yours)
Gender: Male (or yours)
Culture Group: European
Favorite Government: Republic
Shunned Government: Fascism (or Communism or Despotism)
Aggression Level: Center
Build Never: Nothing
Build Often: Off. Land Units, Production, Science
Animations: Use the Persian flcs.
Unique Colors (both Unique and Default): Red (I switched Rome to lime green)
Great Leaders:
Kosciuszko
Pulaski
Dabrowski
Sobieski
Batory
Tarnowski
Zamojski
Chodkiewicz

The Husaria looks like this:

Unit: Husaria
Icon: 56 (The Chinese Rider)
Prerequisite: Chivalry
Class: Land
Standard Orders: All
Shield Cost: 7
Moves: 2
Attack Str: 5
Defense Str: 3
Upgrade to: Cavalry
Zone of Control: Yes
Unit Abilities: Mounted, Starts Golden Age
Required Resources: Horses & Iron
Available to: Poland
AI Strategies: Land
Special Actions: Load, Airlift, Pillage, Upgrade Unit

I've attached the details, Civilopedia descriptions, etc, as a text file. My bic has been heavily modifed, and I suspect most of you have done the same, so I didn't bother uploading a precompiled file. Too much of a hassle to re-enter preferences. Because of that detail, I didn't post this on the "Completed" forum but, except for the effort required in data entry, it really is done.

Bon appetit!

I wonder why they didn't include Poland. I'm not Polish but I wish they included more. They should have also included other Civs too like Spain (they had great influence in the world), Celts, Vikings, and even Aboriginese.

I have one question, did the Polish empire make lots of significant scientific or cultural advancements in our world? Not that it matters at all just asking.

Hmmm...cavalry unit...good choice, but maybe it should be built in the same era as German Panzers:D
Oh, I'm just kiddin'. Poland's cool.

In my opinion though, Communism should definitely be the shunned government. I know how much the Poles suffered under German rule, but before WW2, it was run by a military dictatorship itself. But it was so anti-communist the Soviets actually imposed martial law. Oh, that brings me to another point... I think because it's so staunchly Catholic (heck, the pope is polish, isn't he?), that they should be Industrious/Religious.

I covered a lot of that in the Civilopedia text, but Copernicus (for whom we have a wonder), Madame Curie (Curie was her husband's name), and Chopin are a few scientific/cultural Poles. In addition, they were way ahead of the curve on a lot of socio-political stuff, like having elected leaders way back in the 1600's.

True about the military dictatorship, but that was a pretty short (and relatively benign) period of history. Yeah, the Poles launched Solidarity against the Communists, but the Nazi's exterminated jillions of them during WWII. If I were Polish, I'd take oppression over concentration camps, any day.

Oh, that brings me to another point... I think because it's so staunchly Catholic (heck, the pope is polish, isn't he?), that they should be Industrious/Religious.

That's a pretty accurate assessment. My family is crazy Catholic, with Black Madonnas everywhere. I wrestled with that classification, but decided to go with Scientific mainly because I preferred it. I wouldn't argue against such a modification.

yeah. It actually occured to me that being a religious civ would be the explaination for having Communism shunned. It's the whole anti-religious Marxism vs. Catholicism thing.

oh, and...

...me too...

Whoohoo, I was looking to make a polish mod, but now it seems I don't need to. Well, I would like to add that Kosciuszko is the reason America won the turning battle in their war for independence. Also, Poland has more nobel prize winners than any other nation in the world.

RagnarD - Great Job!! :goodjob:

BTW - I saw somewhere Polish (illegal) translation of Civ3. It was beta, but worked just fine!!!

Thanks for the Kudos!

I decided that there was a lot of good points to dannyevilcat's Religious vs. Scientific argument, although which way you prefer is prolly just a matter of opinion. In any case, I'm posting a modified copy of the details file that replaces Scientific and Bronze Working with Religious and Ceremonial Burial. Download whichever Poland you prefer!

BTW, LordOlO: I'm Polish, but not [that] Polish. I had to dig up the leaders and cities from the internet. :p

In a side note, those of you looking for a different civ to play ought to consider this one, if only for the Special Unit. The Husaria, basically a knight with a little more punch, comes along at a good time for warfare, and provides an offensive unit with a little more of what it's typically used for.

Now if only I could do the graphics. The Husaria, for those of you who don't know, dressed in light cavalry armor, highly ornate, with wings of eagle feathers bowed over their backs. They made quite a visual impression and, according to the books, scared the bejesus out of the bad guys.

EDIT: I could've sworn I posted the Ind/Rel alternate. Are we only allowed one fie per thread?

To imagine what is husaria you have to see it...

Just imagine!!!!! It was the most scarying unit these days. They were doing enourmous noise while moving...

The Polish people should NOT be industrious. Look at the state of roads in Poland today - we have the most bad car accidents of any European nation. And a lot of the big things built in Poland (dams, etc.) were built during the Nazi Occupation (at the cost of institutionalized slavery, but nonetheless not built under a truly Polish government).

Instead, I think they should be scientific/religious. Poland has lots of famous scientists, and it is also very catholic (the church was the rallying point that allowed Poland to expel the great Swedish invasion).

Also, how did you change the civ colors without the game crashing? I tried to change the colors of various civs in my game, and the game would always crash because of it.

Seems a little harsh to judge a country's industriousness on an infrastructure allowed to decay under decades of Communist rule, but since I've never been there, I'll have to defer. In any case, if Industrous/Scientific and Industrous/Religious are valid, certainly Scientific/Religious should be, too. You can use the last detail sheet and replace any reference to "Industrius" to "Scientific". You'd also need to replace any reference to "Masonry" with "Bronze Working" or "BRONZE_WORKING" (if it's a link).

See - this Civ can be all things to all people. What a flexible lot, these Poles! :)

As for the civ colors, I really just did the obvious and used the drop down list to choose different colors. Did you make sure the colors you wanted were not in use when you tried this? I've noticed the game have problems with re-used leader images, so it may be the same with colors.

I'm sure no one wants to hear it..... I just wanted to mention that the Soviets weren't real communists.

I've problem with your civ-addon.
In foreign advisor window I see icon of English Queen as Polish leader, but I should see Persian king :king: !!!! (Am I right???)
I hope so...

Waiting for some advice...........

Yeah. Pretty much.

Freaky. Did you change the animation file names correctly in the bic editor? For instance, all of the forwards should look something like "Art\Flics\Xe_01 blank/B/C .flc" and the reverses should look like "Art\Flics\Xe_02 blank/B/C .flc". That's really the only place I know of to change leader heads and mine, of course, works fine.

If that doesn't work, change your leader name to "Queen Jadwiga" and just roll with it. ;)

THNX for help.....

I'll try it out..... But I'm almost sure that I did it right...

BTW - picture of English Queen in foreign advisor is in pcx format not in flc - I think that this is file art/leaderheads/LZ_CULTB.pcx

Thanks Ragnar, for your thread. Im Polish too, in addition to German and Irish (what a mutt, hey?) and Im going to use your ideas for my personal games. :D

There was a thread about civs to make in October, before the game was out. Poland came up then, but I had forgotten about it.

Great choice of special unit! :goodjob:

I can been trying to make a Polish civ for a while but couldn't come up with a unit. If any one is looking for names or titles for leaders check out a web site called www.rulers.org it has a list of most countries, if not all. Past and Presant.
