pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Prussia

pre-release info
The militaristic design angle is fine - at least fits the name "Prussia" - but I found the lack of more unique Production bonuses a bit off.

Prussia was always a little industrial giant even back in the days of Friedrich (especially so after they ate the entire Silesia, which was an important industrial center at the time), it was this aspect that supported their war machine, and a military-oriented design could address this aspect better. Staatseisenbahn should do more than just improve the rural tiles (really? not urban tiles?) and increase trade yields.

Actually, the estimated population of the 4 largest cities in the American (mainland) colonies when the revolution began were:
Philadelphia - 40,000
New York City - 25,.000
Boston - 15,000
Charleston - 12,000

The reason New York City and Philadelphia had already surpassed Boston was that hey provided better access to the interior: eastern Pennsylvania had been settled all the way up to the crest of the Allegheny Mountains by the early 17609s (after the Seven Year's War was won) and the Hudson Valley provided an easy avenue from Manhatten Island all the way north to Albany and had been settled since the Dutch controlled it.

Then, of course, after the Erie Canal was built, New York took off because the combination of canal and the rivers provided easy access from New York City all the way to the Great Lakes and Chicago and so it became rthe great 'entry point' for immigration in the 19th century.

All that said, though, Boston remained an intellectual capital of the United States until the late 19th century because of its concentration of early educational institutions: Harvard one of the first 'higher education' establishments in North America, followed by the Massachusettes Institute of Technology founded in the 1860s.
yeah i was more thinking importance than actual raw population

I wonder if Prussia will be very popular in MP on large maps with 12+ civs, and rather unpopular on duels.

These scales-with-numbers-of-players abilities (see also Himiko QoW) are quite interesting, but seem very hard to balance between useless and very strong.

Prussia's Background Art

looks like the time period is probably pre-zeppelin. Looks like mid-1800s perhaps.
You're right. Either way nothing to me stands out, especially linking it to Prussia/Germany. If I hadn't known I would have guessed it could have been the background for Great Britain.
Probably a reference to all the Hot Air Balloons in the Exploration Age backgrounds.
It was. Would have made more sense here than them appearing for Spain.

i assume they are balanced around standard size map and standard # of civs

The list should contain cities from Poland, actually since a huge chunk of it was Prussian at the time: Breslau (Wroclaw), Posen (Posnan), Bromberg (Bydgoszcz), Stettin (Szczeczin), and Danzig (Gdansk) were all important to the Prussians, and so were the Baltic cities of Memel (Klaipeda), Königsberg (Kaliningrad) and Mitau (Jelgava).

There's pretty good information what cities in Germany proper were part of the Prussian empire before the unification, as well as the other in which they were absorbed.

Hopefully it's easy to change the names manually in the code, like it was in Civ3 & Civ4, so I can do that myself.
The choice of cities is really quite ignorant. Historically, Prussia was a Baltic state and not even part of the HRE, even though they eventually rose to power thru their "side hustle" in Brandenburg, it would have been so easy to include at least Königsberg. That non of the other cities apart from Berlin and Cologne (and maybe Mageburg) had any signifiance to Prussian history and most of them were never even part of Prussia is just ridiculous.

Yeah. It's effectively the German city list, which is less flavourful. I will try to alter the city list to my own once someone with actual knowledge of coding has figured out how to do it.

Where can you find this city list?

On the plus side, this introduces a tiny opportunity for post ww2 peaceful German civ... for the fourth age? I mean, I can't imagine devs making fourth age work like the first three ages in terms of demanding civ change and having equal roster to them (neither I can imagine having as long tech tree as other three), it would be also very painful having to decide whether to put say America in the 3rd or 4th age  but on the other hand there seems to be a clear conscious push to avoid referencing post ww2 world (or post 60s world?).

It is very interesting how 3rd era civs are named as not-modern-country-in-general-but-specific-pre-ww2-regime. It really looks for me as if civs such as Soviets, (postcolonial) India, (post ww2) Germany, (CCP) China, (post ww2) Japan, Thailand (renamed as such in the 30s), (postcolonial) Indonesia, modern Etiopia etc were purposefuly avoided in the 3rd era to use them in the 4th. I mean why else would devs use their pre-ww2/ww1 predecessor state in every instance possible.

Personally I see three options:
1) Fourth age is going to be special in some ways, for example allowing ascending to it with the civ from the 3rd age or reforming it to a "newer version"
2) Devs actually are going to make yet anothet crazy bold move and indeed introduce 4th era with the entire separate civ roster - so no America post ww2 :D
3) Fourth age is indeed going to have an entire separate civ roster, but some countries such as America are going to get anyway as their sci fi futuristic versions
Honestly a fourth age America they may go with “United States” since they’re being more varied with the faction names now. That’s just a wild guess of course

If that were the case why not use the term British Empire, instead of Great Britain? Unless they wanted name it United Kingdom instead. :dunno:

United Kingdom 🇬🇧 will be the name of the Fourth Age civ in the second major expansion pack

So clearly in the devs' consumer research reports, they found that players like military fantasies in the modern age (/s). Ho hum.

I still hope at some point they introduce a new defensive civ/leader type so we can have some counters to all of these aggressively military playstyles. Call it the "turtle" type (or "protectionist," "isolationist," "enduring").

Dai Viet would be a good example of that. Maybe also Nepal, Silla or Bulgaria. Just sayin'.

you could probably play Prussia, Russia or the USA defensively.

Could, but I also would just like some "infrastructure" counterparts that have, say two civilian UUs instead of two military UUs.

We had 'personas for the Leaders that give alternative means of play (potentially). Now that Civ VII has Age-specific Civilizations, why not 'Personas' for them?

The modern Prussia/Germany could come in a Militaristic version as we've seen, but also come in a Scientific/Economic version that emphasizes the Zollverein, the Social Democratic movement, and a bunch of Scientific/Economic civilian people like Humboldt, Planck, Daimler, Haber, etc.

Militaristic/Diplomatic France that we have already could be matched with a Cultural/Scientific French Republic with a collection including Pasteur (and the associated Institute Pasteur Wonder?), Curie, and a double handful of Impressionist artists.

OR, of course, they could simply tweak the Civ Title - Imperial Germany instead of Prussia, both Modern, or French Republic instead of French Empire.

Civ VII's framework allows a lot more scope for multiple Civs either in different Ages (linear progressions) or in the same Age with different characteristics. The only proviso might be that if you pick one version in an Age, the other does not appear in the same Age in your (single player) game to avoid potential confusion.

I actually was for this for getting representation for related civs in VI, so doing now would probably be okay.

Like Smash Bros "echo fighters."

Although as a personal preference, I don't need Germany in the game. I am happy with us ending somewhere around 1900 for several reasons, the most recent being no desire to dredge up existential dread over current politics.
