IIRC, someone posted that when they investigate an enemy city, they use the Rename button and change the name to something like "Next"

Now that's a good name!

If I am going to try to take several cities in a round, I like to send a spy or two around to investigate. I will rename the enemy cities with notes to myself.

For example, in one I'll rename it 2R_CW_R and that would mean to me that they have 2 riflemen for defense, they have city walls and they are building a rifleman unit at the time. I don't get a chance to use it often, but it has helped some in the past.

Noticed when you build enough cities, you go through all your default national city names then go along cities like capua, toronto, etc. Then it goes back to same ol' cities... I had a game with 2 New York and 2 Washington... I was lost!
So I started to make my own citynames.

So anyways... here's my list.

2- 2
3- 3
4- 4
5- 5

Now this is damned interesting ploy! Might use it in the future.

I just make up the first thing that comes into my head it gives each game a bit more uniqeness I find. As for calling your cities 1,2,3 etc I cannot relate to that at all. I sometimes try and name them in relation to their geographical surroundings like I might named a city that is really far south 'Australis' or whatever.

Strange. Normally it doesn't cycle but it gives the names of others civ towns. That's why after having built 20 mongols cities, I was proposed... Zimbabwe! no comment

What I normally do is name the place after the geographical or strategic feature they're near. Like Old Town (capital) or "Two Pheasants" (two specials) or "East Headland" (eastmost promentory) or "Zulu View" (overlooking their homeland) or "North Canal" (on an isthmus) or "Roman Choke" (sealing off an another civ). Where similar features on a large map would repeat, I add an "island name", like one island may be "Holm" so I have "Eastholm" etc.

I got very lazy on GOTM #2 and just accepted what was given. When they started repeating I added a meaningless prefix. In the last few turns I needed to form cities with the last engineers so these all became "Last xxxx...".

And on the current GOTM (3) I just love the Viking city names. That's because I've either visited these places or know their history. So I'll keep those too.

And I occasionally use the "rename enemy city by spy" feature and always use the "let's see your foreign service map while I'm here" feature. I don't usually bother with a defence code because that can change so quickly. But "Next conquest" is a good reminder.

-It depends on the mood/situation. If I build on an island or in the Arctic, I usually call them Missile Base. Or Nuclear Base. Or Outpost Alpha/Beta/etc....

-If there is a lot of hills or mountians, then Hillside or Mountian Side.

-If there are resources near by then probably a conbination of their names. For example: Fishy, Whale Town, CornIMeanWheat, Buffalo Wings, etc...

-If it's near an AI civ that I hate, Souix Sucks, etc.. or an stragetic landmark. Cutoff Point, etc...

-If it's got lots of food/resources Sweet Spot and Trade City come to mind.

-Also the Capital is commonally Called Capital (This is a carry-over from Fishheads old naming scheme)

-And if I have no reference points as above, then whatever comes to my mind first, FortresOfEvil, Sucky Spot, No Ideas!, ø¤Œ«‰¼¿ you know...whatever.

-And if I have no ideas then I use the default.

Okay. I always loved the first city of the Aztecs. Tenochtitlan. Babylon also for some bizarre reason. and another aztec Ayopolctio or something anyways...
 
I usually play as Americans or English. I keep the default names. When I'm the English, if I run out of names or if I capture a city, I'll rename them Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Aberdeen, Stirling, Carmarthen, Jersey, Scapa Flow, and other Scotish, Irish, or Welsh cities.

I tend to keep the default names, but in some cases I'll rename captured cities. I remember playing as the English in the Napoleon scenario once and sweeping across France, capturing cities, and changing all their French names into nonsense English-sounding names like 'Bordough' (Bordeaux) or 'Mansfield' (Le Mans). Or when I play as the Romans, I'll give captured cities Latin-sounding names like 'Eboracum Novum' (New York) or 'Corn.Magn.Parv.' (Little Bighorn--short for 'Cornus Magnus Parvus, which I think means 'Small Large Horn' in Latin, though the grammar is probably wrong).

When playing on Earth, I sometimes put cities in their 'correct' locations and I sometimes don't bother with it. When playing on a random or otherwise nonhistorical map, I name cities after nearby features if I decide not to use the default names.

I usually use my custom civ, the Irish, with cities like:

Belfast
Killkenny
Cobh
Cork
Dungarvan
Londonderry
Bantry
Westport
Skiberrean

It's boring to give names like 1, 2, 3, etc, but it's also useful. Later in the game when I'm building caravans like mad and checking my supply/demand advisor often, it's nice to see at a glance where my cities are.

I usually name my capital CAPITAL CITY, and then I theme each continent so I can tell which city is where. For instance, in GOTM 1 I gave all my original continent's cities names of girls I've known, starting from my first girlfriend in JHS and working my way out chronologically--so I could also tell not only the continent, but roughly how far away each city was from the capital. Another continent I named with Japanese girls' names. I usually leave my conquered city names as they are though.

I hate having 200 cities and not being able to find one. The 'find city' option in civ2 sucks! It doesn't list them in any logical order as far as I can tell. I think in civ 1 you could type in the name, but in civ 2 you have to scroll through for some reason.
