The poll "Maximum number of Civs in a Civ3 game should be..." is closed today. The total number of votes is 170. Thanks for voting!

As you can see from the results below, 10 Percent of the players believe the number of Civs allowed in Civ2 is just fine, but an overwhelming number of players (90 percent) believe Civilization III should allow 10 or more Civs in a game.

Maximum number of Civs in a Civ3 game should be...

Firaxis has not confirmed the number of Civs that'll be in a Civ3 game, although most Civ3 previews suggested that Civ3 would still allow 7 Civs in game. Hopefully Firaxis would reveal this info in the next official site update...

I voted for 12.

But actually I have never played a game with more than 20 civs/opponents so maybe....

I disagree with you Thunderfall. I don't think yours is a safe conclusion.

I would point out that exactly half the people who voted (85) preferred 16 Civs or less. This is therefore not a "more the merrier" message from my point of view. Instead it shows an even split.

Exactly!

In fact 59% of those that voted DON'T WANT to see more than 20 civs in a game!

Listen, it's all about having options. The more of these wonderful things you have, the better your gaming experience will be. No one is forcing anyone else to play with 20 all the time, but it should be available for when we want to.

Oh, and I voted for 20 if that wasn't obvious already.

"Anything less, would be un-civilized."

This argument makes little sense, stormerne. What made you choose 16 as the dividing point? Did you just pick it because that was the half-way point? Then of course you got a 50/50 split! It seems to me that the logical place to measure the difference is where Thunderfall placed it, and that is at the 7 mark (7 being the number of civs in civ1 and civ2). Of course, he seems to have mistaken votes for percent by claiming 17% supported 7 civs in civ3. In fact, 17 people, which is 10%. So the split is 90% to 10%, with 90% saying they want *more* civs in Civ3.

You're right, TTG. It should be 10%.

When I say "The more the merrier" I actually mean most people prefer more Civs to fewer Civs.

Only if you define "more" as meaning more than they allow in Civ2.

The way that my argument makes sense TTG is from an analysis of comments that accompanied the poll responses, not just from the numbers on the graph. If you check those comments, and if you combine comments from the fora, you will get the distinct impression that there is indeed a group - roughly half of respondents - who definitely fall into the "more the merrier" category. They tended to reigster in the 20+ option. The rest seem to be in favour of a smaller and (and this the point) finite limit.

Let's just define "more" as double . Well... That would be a whoping 67% who want at least twice as many covs as in previous civilization games.

I see what you mean now stormerne.

I think we should just all agree that people want more Civs and leave it at that.

It makes sense to want more than we have had so far... the increased realism & complexity, but it's not just that. Up till now we have be able to choose up to 7 civs. The *option* of having more would certainly be an asset even if once we all actually tried it we found that it sucked with 20. At least that way we would be able to choose for ourselves the best level of play. As it stands right now, we don't know what we're missing.

I suppose I'm stating the obvious now. There's not much more to say on this topic.

(making the assumption that >20 civs =25)

Mean: 17.7
Median: 16
Mode: 20+

I think that is pretty clear on what the people here want.

Mean, Median, and mode... hehe

Here's some better statistics, from someone who actually knows a thing or two about statistics:

I will assume that more than 20 is 21, not 25.

Mean = 16.2
Standard Deviation = 5.13
The probability that if we were to survey ALL Civ 3 fans, that more than half of them would want more than 7 civs in the game = 96%.

So, in short, we can say with 96% certainty that a majority of Civers want more Civs in the game, not fewer.
