Praets are the best, but any of the other very strong early rush units get votes from me:
Quechua, Immortal, Vulture (basically a swordsman that you can use in an axe rush)

My other 2 candidates would be Cataphract and Jannisary, 2 units that absolutely dominate everything else on the field at the time you can usually get them. For both of them, you can basically run through whatever they have, only using siege when facing a city with unusually high defenses or high defenses and on a hill. Very powerful for a later game rush.

Personally my favorite is the redcoat because they are easy to get with +50% gunpowder units (+25% from UU and pinch) which only takes 5 exp. This is great for defending against grenadiers which is the rifleman best counter imo. At immortal/diety I don't war early even with a great UU very often.

Really? I would think that REX followed by massive unit spam and early war is the only way to stay on top on a level so high as DEiTY. I'm so inexperienced.

I am too, so that could a bad assumption on my part. So far I have several 10+ wins on immortal and i'm 0-2 on diety. Got to figure out how to stop those < 2000 BC attacks on me.

It all depends on when you play and what map. Any horse based UU is going to do great on a map where there is a lot of flat land (Great Plains). The Berserker and the naval UU's dominate on Archipelago and other water maps. With lots of civs, it all depends on when you want to win. Praetorian, Jannissary, Panzer, Cataphract, Berserker, East Indiamen, Carrack, and Redcoat all get my nod.

Panzers come too late IMO. So do Navy SEALS. I mean, I'm usually blowing the AI outta the water if I make it to Industrialism. Tanks are usually used for final pushes to clean up the last bit of free land quickly.

Well in my games, I like to let the opponent grow, but not too much since I curb their growth but in this one game, germany is on one continent with Saladin, Brennus, Kublai, Gilgamesh, Qin Shi Huang, Monty, and Mansa Musa. He vassalized everyone but Brennus and Monty, so me and my vassal Zara on the other continent declared war, I took a city and destroyed two German SODs while they tried to invade Brennus and his vassals freed themselves. Im fattening Germany for the slaughter since I havent had a decent war in a long time since Civ III

Good call. Usually a "good war" ends in me losing out. I can't seem to have a war thats difficult without losing cities or improvements. I either slaughter the AI or get owned b/c I didn't build up enough early defenders.

the praetorian is obliviously the best overall as it is effective well in to the middle ages long after swordsmen are past their best.

however in recent weeks i have developed a omoro warrior fetish for some reason they just seem much stronger than the normal musket man.

they look sweet as hell too, same with the janissaries, you know that they wear spoons on their heads? They did that in real life too...

I love good wars. It's usually you vs one and the wars are epic. Going back and forth over cities pouring endless resources into units that die anyways, my best two were Me as Bismarck against Shaka and Me as xerxes against Iroquois in Civ 3, both had HUGE continents and fought to the death. Civ IV needs more of that, huge wars where both sides beat the living death out of each other

Quecha - purely because you can roll over any nearby civ with 6-7 of these. You dont need any resource either and you can build them on turn 1.

the Roman and mongol unit both require a resource.

Then again on a multi player game with other human players its another matter.

lets face it, anyone starting near TMIT is going to spam spearmen/axe like theres no tomorrow. I would just play the Greeks and be done with it.

They are amazing because of this.

the Roman and mongol unit both require a resource.

Ahhh... but as soon as Bronze Working is discovered and copper is hooked up, the Quecha is basically useless whereas the Praetorian is useful throughout the Middle Ages.

Hell, on an Earth 18 game, I was using Praets, X-bows, and Trebuchet to invade Montezuma! When using x-bows, you don't even need to upgrade to Macemen.

The mongolian unit may not be as long lived, but it will certainly last longer than the Quecha which is defeated by Axemen (strength 5 + 50% vs. melee)

I don't see how praetorians shoulder through xbows any better than keshiks through pikes...they remain a viable, hammer-efficient source of city raids into the middle ages, but certainly are countered at machinery, which the AI likes.

In one game I had an extreme of attacking a civ with grenadiers with keshiks, and forcing capitulation , but normally the stopping tech for horse archers is engineering. The massive defensive bonus of castle + pike is too much.

Elephants should be a UU list for every civ hahahaha. Effective stack defense and decent city attack until gunpowder ----> elephants are among the longest-lived viable units in the game, and they're not even unique...

fast worker is great, but i need a unit that has both longevity and combat worthiness... thus, the redcoat. i have seen the defenders kill even infantry if your behind, and smother rifleman if your on par.
