You don't really have a track record of subjugating others. Most of the Civs included in the game have a record of being predatory states and are famous for attempting to export their world view by force if necessary. Interestingly enough, many of the civs included have a peace-loving, harmless northern neighbor which never merits consideration. Consider, for instance, Denmark and Germany. It would be tough to distinguish between these two today using any measure of what makes a country 'civilized' if we are speaking of peaceful accomplishments such as science, art, literature, music, and culture. However, the Germans hands down beat out the Danes in terms of number of people slaughtered and subjugated in their history. (The Danes' distinctly uncivilized ancestors, the Vikings, however, who were famous for their ability to gruesomely exterminate others, did manage to make it into the game in an expansion). Likewise with England and her relatively less destructive northern neighbor Scotland. Canada is America's Denmark.

only holds for recent history (past 100-150 years maybe). before that, the danes actually weren't that peaceful. 2 post-viking-times examples:

1523
The Kalmar Union is dissolved as the Swedes revolt after the "Stockholm bloodbath" performed by King Christian II of Denmark. Denmark and Norway remain united, however.

1686: King Christian V. of Denmark, ... marched an army of 18,000 men to Hamburg. He issued an ultimatum, demanding the city pay 400,000 Thalers and accept a Danish garrison of 3,000 men. The burghers of Hamburg united in their efforts and withstood a siege that lasted 21 days.

also, there were numerous conflicts and several wars about the region of slesvig (schleswig) between denmark and german states from the 14th century up until the late 19th century...

Probably will go the first game as the Germans. I was always the Germans in civ3 so I want to check out whats new and stuff. 10 more days Im getting really excited now. :goodjob:

With me it has got to be either the japanese egyptians or chinese ... dont know why i always do well with these civ's

I'm gonna play as the english, firstly i am english, and secondly it is the ultimate test of an englishman, to rule more of the world than we did before!

Point taken. I also forgot about the brief but important role of the Danes in the Thirty Years' War. However, I still suspect if we take a look at the number of people killed, the Germans for the last 1000 years still beat the Danes by a wide margin, even if they racked up most of that tally only during the last 140 years.

this is so obviously true as it could possibly be, out of discussion... i didn't see anyone denying this here, though...!

France and Louis Quatorze, whaddya think!!

I hesitated a lot between my patriotic duty and the romans, but I guess the old guys will come second

Aucun doute, les Français.Napoléon.histoire de bouter les anglais, encore et encore..remarque, vu le temps qu il fait chez eux..et pis les allemands qui conaissent le chemin.A ces touristes!lol

probably gonna try japanese. I played the russians a lot in civ III, gonna try somone new.

Gotta be the English. If there aren't cries of "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" occasionally I will be very upset, and might have to fiddle with the civ-specific sounds :)

i picked the indians, because i am one lol. but also because indian history is so rich and the things that have been accomplished by this civilization has been great. the only yhting that i dont really like is the leader choise. asoka is great but ghandi needs to go. there r better leaders in indian history such as porus. plus i heard asoka traits r like peaceful? asoka was one mean man when he was in his prime and nothing stood in his way when he wanted somethin! which is why hes beast lol. so yea india is my choice.(plus if any of u have seen alexander, the last battle against the indians also gives me more of a reason to play as them, the indians kicked some ass! ahaha

For want of Britain, I'll rename England as Britain and play as Queen Vic.

For Queen and Country!

Rule Britannia!

Germany or Rome

Random, but I would like to get stuck with Bismarcque's Germany, Japan, Rome, Roosevelt's America, Gandhi's India, or Peter's Russia

Inca for 2 reasons I like them from civ 3 and only 3 other people seem to have chosen them....Don't like the real popular nations. after Inca's I will probably do randoms to see whats up. Am very disappointed that Zulu didnt make the cut...They were awesome.

My initial game is always either Rome or America. This is just to get the feel of the controls. I usually dont finish that game.
