Well...it's down again.

I guess Markos will have some excuse like 97% of the time we're up and 3% downtime is no big deal.

Seems funny that they are down so much and crippled (slow) so much of the time.

I bet that site is losing some reasonable amount of hits because of people getting sick of the maintencance problems.

Oh, come on. When did you last see one which lasted more than a few hours? Months ago. Before the forum switch. Now, this one has lasted for about nine hours, but don't tell me it's common...

You're using Marcos-logic. The fact is that if something fails 5% of the time, it pisses users off and makes them start looking elsewhere. It's not just the time lost...it's the impact it has on your audience. How would you react to a radio station that had lots of problems with transmitting properly?

In the last 6 months we've had the following:

- ~5 several-hour slowdowns
- many more instances where the "time bug" has screwed up post orders.
- "terminal slowness" about 40% of the time.

It's a real issue. Poly would be busting through the roof if they didn't have these issues. They're still doing well...because they have a great community and lots of good content. But they underestimate the technical issue. Plus it is pretty annoying llistening to them talk about "how it's no big deal" or "the problem is fixed" (and then a few days later the problem resurfaces. It shows they are NOT THINKING.

What it shows, in all honesty, is that DanQ, one of the site owners, has a conflict of interest because he's also an employee of the horrible hosting service we have the misfortune to be stuck with. Short of dropping him I can't see anything being done about it.

Aaaaah...grasshopper!

You have identified a real part of the problem. The questions are:

1. Which pays Dan more? The Gamestats thing or Poly? (If the answer is both pay little than that diminishes the conflict.)

2. I'm worried this whole Gamestats is about to go under. I mean...the internet in general has a lot of fracturing companies...and the tech problems are a sign of trouble.

3. I hope Dan and Mark (or at least Mark) are lining up possiblealternative hosting spots. Doesn't mean we jump now...but they need to be ready. We should see if AOL HEaven would take us under their wing. They seem to have a great site and tech support and they were once a GS afffiliate too. I'm sure Infatuation would find that ironic.

Oh btw...it's up now...operating at about 5 minutes/page load. Please don't tell me to do a tracert!! GRRRR!!!!

*sigh* Yes, this is the first time in months that I visit CivFanatics. And they´ve been pretty slow more or less since the forum upgrade.
Dan being with GameStats doesn´t really make things easier indeed.
But I sure do hope everything will be solved, because my site will probably be hosted by Apolyton some time in the not too near future.

Oh, it's never been "down" exactly. I could access it throughout the day, but with the load speeds you describe.

Hey Shnapper!

That was pretty cool when we all got banned by MTG, no!!

You really should try to be more respectable since you're a staff member. Don't let the hoi polloi like me get you in trouble!

well that 3% sure seems like it occurs only when I am online.

I don't know what is going on there.A great site that is slower than the 2nd coming and down more than a cheap hooker

Anyway, I started the whole thing with a copycat thread of your copycat thread...

Juize: I shouldn't use this forum to advertise a site, but... Apolyton is by a considerable distance the largest Civilization site on the internet, with a large and very active forum community. It's currently experiencing some problems, though. However, when this has settled down, I much suggest you try it. We have a large finnish off-topic community, among other things.

Smash: Don't take now as an indicator, the entire site has been like this all day. However, you're right the site has occasionally been very slow. I doubt the new forums alone could have made it so (although I suspect they were involved), but I think a number of software upgrades on Apolyton or one of the many other hosted sites on the same server have made it so. The situation improved considrably last week with the addition of another 500 MiB of RAM, which I suspect is what has now backfired and caused this crash. From what I know, GameStats is increasing its server capacity slowly but surely but it can be damn hard to tell.

...so civfanatics takes in refugees from apolyton again...just remember, our mods are B*ST*RDS...

Bye kitten

Well...we started it. I meant for it to turn into a "Mongolia bashing" session and it did.

but nothing, Snappy.
Do I yell about CFC at poly?

Bad form for a staff member of Apolyton to post such a link, old boy.

Poly is up and running properly again, but feel free to visit any old time.

Try posting that at poly.
Don't you know we love you, Kitten?
C'mere, give us a hug.
Oh, and here is more bad news for you, Kitten, Navy (GP) and Snappy (Snapcase) are buddies of mine, and are welcome to come here and shoot the breeze whenever they want to.

Apolyton itself doesn't have any downloads or other data compared to CFC. They rely on the sites they host like Scenario League and whatever.

Yes, I know Apolyton, but the 'poly' name was a bit irregular, because I have only once
looked it rushily. Hmmm... I couldn't load These forums at CFC in today&yesterday.
Was there problems on my computer, or d'you had same problem?..

Sun Tzu: Actually, we have about 2/3 as many files for direct download as you (considerably more if you count CtP and CtP2), plus the stuff under the various affiliates and in the archives. This site is probably better for Civ2 scenarios, though, because you have a better preview, review and assessment system. I'd say the news coverage is just about equivalent in terms of promptness and broad coverage, the design is absymal on both sites, and our forums are better.

Juize: It's been down for me too...
