Perhaps its just me, but it doesnt always feel right to see greece, egypt and rome sometimes adopt judaism as their state religion. As far as I know judaism is a tribe religion, belonging to the jewish people. Greece, Egypt and Babylon should perhaps begin with a religion symbolicing polyteism. It could be just one religion instead of several separated but it shouldnt give any "we love you because we share the same religion" diplmomacy bonus. Then when monoteistic religions begin spreading in their cities there should be a -1 happiness penalty in those cities, which should begin pressure the leaders to adopt that religion.

What happened to the idea of splitting religions which were discussed before? I thought it was an excellent idea if christianity would split in catolicism, protestantism and orthodox for example.

The whole of the 'Nine Ideas' thread covers this.

I'd be very much in favour of a broad "Polytheistic" religion, but I think it would be difficult to implement as described. A general religion like this, if spawned through tech research like all others, would be limited to a single place. However, polytheistic groups have sprouted throughout the world.

It might make more sense to have this as the "default" religion, or something similar. This way, there is no positive or negative impact on relations. Generic polytheistic temples could be built that had the same impact as regular religious temples, while...

1) Line of sight
2) Shrine income
3) Impact on relations
4) Civics
5) More advanced religious buildings (Monasteries and "Cathedral" type buildings)

... would be unavailable to these polytheists and only to the game's main religions.

Generic? perhaps what we can have is specific temples for each area.
Egypt under Polytheism would build Mastabas.
Babylon under Polytheism would build Ziggurats.
Greece under Polytheism would build Parthenon-like temples ;).
etc...

Indians, well, they would just fit into Hinduism so no prob.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to work civ-specific polytheist temples, as it would only be for about 4 civs no more ;). How about that?

EDIT: oh and we won't need movies and all so no need to worry about that.

Actually, you're absolutely right. I completely forgot about the civ specific generic temples I saw in another mod (one of which used your ziggurat model I think :P). It's possible that this was in the Total Realism mod.

And you can use the current XML to disallow the construction of these "Generic Polytheistic Temples" to cities with no other religion. No difficult programming.

As to civ-specific, you can probably lump similar civs like the Europeans together to save work, especially because these civs commonly have a world religion.
