You have two cities connected by their ports. Is there any production bonus reason why you would also want them connected by rail once you have railroad?

Thanks!!

Yep, there's a 25% bonus to Production to be exact. So it's worth connecting cities on the same island by railroad if you're able to. Not exactly sure if it works for cities on other islands, though.

Harbors can provide the railroad bonus. All that is required is a full set of harbor-railroad connections to the capital. So, if you have an inland capital, RR connection from capital to City A with a harbor plus harbor connection to cities B and C on another landmass means Cities A, B and C will all have the RR bonus. If city C is then connected to city D by RR, city D also gets the RR bonus. Also, remember that your capital never gets RR bonus.

Yeah, only need rail connections to inland cities (or from inland capitals to a coastal city) since harbors will count as rail connections. Saves tremendously on tile maintenance to go primarily coastal as you only need roads/rails for inland cities or ease of travel between cities (and can settle for roads over rails for that).

Oh, thanks Browd and Barghaest! I've also wondered about this for a while. Glad to know you do get the production bonus. That makes railroad a much higher priority tech for naval civs than I realized.
