Possible wierdness of captured water city territory

Early in the marketing cycle they talked about using aquatic cities offensively against other cities. Who knows if that's still the case.

You need to be either at war with the colony who's city 'moved on' or have an open borders agreement. And founding an outpost in another's colony territory likely still means a forced declaration of war.
Sorry, I worded that rather vaguely. I was speculating that if you have a water city claim a bunch of territory and then settle a new city within that territory, the new city might take control of the territory in its vicinity. That way if the old city is taken, your newer city isn't suddenly surrounded by enemy territory, and if the newer city is taken, the attacker isn't left with a little splotch in the middle of enemy territory.

Moving cities? Perhaps we could put giant jaws on the aquatic cities, and use them to fight other cities in melee!
We could even have moving cities on the ground, and call them, em... Tractor cities!

I Tweeted Firaxis to ask if aquatic cities can engage each other in combat. Kevin responded negative. They have to stay a few tiles apart.

Also answered: Aquatic cities can flip each others territory tiles by overrunning them.

So, in short, territory roaming can only happen up to the 3 tile distance limit.

I'm not sure that's the case. It soumds to me like you could slowly move your city all over the map unless blocked by the presence of another city.

That's what he meant. Up to the 3 tile limit of another city.

A city that's standing in my way is a city asking to be conquered.

I actually already knew that cities can't move into range of each other for a while, so I had some time to think about that and honestly: It's a bit boring but necessary, the exploits (putting 2 cities next to each other for double-strength and easy re-capture?) and the silliness would just be completely awkward.

In the end though.. it does put into question what city movement is really good for to be honest. Aside from cheesy "nonsense-strategies", what exactly is the actual benefit of moving cities? You certainly can't move your cities into safer waters because there will probably be your other cities. You can't really use them offensively, because at minimum range they're still out of range of the other city. The more I think about it the more it seems to be a new mechanic "just to be a new mechanic".

I thought he meant that he thought a city could only move within a 3tile range of the point where it was founded.

Given the penalties in this games anyway... what is actually stopping us from founding a satellite city and just taking ALL OF THE SEA..

I think that if you move city away that you lose tiles that are too far away from being workable.

The other sponsors can use their cities to take your tiles.

Well, water.

I'm slightly disappointed that I cannot order my city to destroy the opposing city. World conquest with cities would've made me buy rising seas for lols.

Yeah, I was kinda hoping to turn a city into an enormous dreadnought.

Our magnificent leader, there's a city Sloowly sloowly getting closer IT'S GONNA DEVOUR US ALL!

It still can be modded very easily if it is the same as for the settling of cities (and not hardcoded). So all who want to test/play with attacking cities, should be able to do so...

I don't think you can attack cities with another city.. believe me.. I tried. in Civ 5 if you place cities close enough it's not possible to shoot at them with another city.
