Current game as the Arabs, Monarch difficulty. Dutch are orange, Vikings dark purple, Spanish blue, and Portugal light purple. The northeast of the continent was originally Portugese, but they kindly agreed to give it to me. I'm currently at war with Spain, and still looking for the other continent which is somewhere out there.

I waited until I got Cavalry, as my Ansar Warriors and Medieval Infantry were getting slaughtered by the Dutch Swiss Mercs. The Dutch were by far my largest rival ingame, so I had to take them out. With 100 Cavalry and an Ansar army, I quickly overran them. After that I got a bit lazy and turned into a trading empire instead of conquering the others, and ended up getting a diplo win. I had something like 9 of the 13 votes. Of course, the turn before I finished the UN, the Vikings went and declared war on me. If I had felt like it I would have absolutely crushed them, but I wanted to get onto a new game.

If I read DWetzel minimap correctly, he also owns an island in the center top of the map. Must be where he is getting his iron, horses, and coal from. Not sure what the Icon is under the rubber, or does that mean he is trading someone for that? I do not trade with the AI, so am not sure what it is.

No, that island up in the top center is the Mayans (who drew the short end of the stick as far as locations go). I truly have just the one city. All the resources (and the two luxes) that you see are via trades with the AI. Strictly speaking, I don't need to trade for the luxes, but I am because it's cheap (6 gpt, +1 gold shipping and handling) and it keeps the AI happy and tied up in deals.

To Choxorn: Yeah, the military is a bit of a drag (in looking at the screen shot, I see I forgot to actually switch to Democracy--oops) , but it's worth it. I think I'm paying about 70-80 gpt in unit support, but tech sales more than make up for it.

Tourist commerce is also a HUGE benefit to me in this game. I'll have to check how much tourist commerce I have, but it's a lot.

I've played a few more turns; my goal is to go Modern before the game ends. It'll be close. The monster Zulus (that would be that huge yellow blob) have 100+ cities and just went Modern; I'm second in tech though (having scored the ToE, which I rarely manage).

Monarch. Finished it off last night, 20k win in 1884.

And the Democracy thing was no joke. Sure, the unit support is 4 instead of 0... but the per-unit cost is 2 instead of 1. Given that I had about 40 military units in total (18 crusaders, about 5 each of infantry/guerillas/cav/artillery, and a couple of random conquistadors just for fun and other-continent pilaging), it probably cost me about 30 gpt.

Just finished a game as the Vikings on Monarch difficulty. I was going for a conquest, and my transports loaded with Marines were one turn away from reaching the last remaining cities, but then the domination victory sprung up on me.
