  1. Do not use the Governer!
  2. Do not automate workers!
  3. In anarchy, micromanage your cities for food i.e. pop growth!
  4. Reduce science on the last 1 or 2 turns while not increasing turns needed to complete research!
  5. Install a mod pack putting tiny mood badges on citizens in city view!
    [/list=1]

  1. Whats a mode pack?

Try to research Monarchy ASAP.(get pottery though) No matter the difficulty level, you will get it before the AI 99% of the time.
If you try to play peace, sell Monarchy before AI gets republic, that way every AI will switch to Monarchy and only you are on Republic, huge boost for science and commerce.
If you play AW style you will be the first to switch government, then trigger GA if the UU is ancient unit. Again, huge boost.
Plus, polythesim and Monarchy will sell at great price, another huge boost.

PTW = Play the World = the Civ3 expansion that was released a long time ago.

A mod pack is something you add to your game to make it better. As for the mood badge mod pack, try the link in my sig (Civ color pop heads).

[civ3] & [ptw]
EXPAND quickly!! always build a lot of settlers early on in the game.

[civ3] & [ptw] if you start out really close to another civ, then build a Warrior/Jaguar Warrior asap and wipe the other civ out.

for [civ] only,

1) at the beginning of the game, build wonders first, they'll be completed very fast since you just have to click space or enter. a project that says is going to take 200 turns will only take 30 or so turns.

At the begining of the game do not build Wonder but a granary and a lot of Sttlers and Workers. Imagine how many Settlers and Workers you can build during the time one build the Pyramid. How many more cities you will end up to the Great Wonder builder.

2) when you are preparing for a war against your enem(y)(ies), always let you troops go over to the border first. don't start war unprepared.

Here I have to agree with the fact that you MUST prepare before declaring. But check carrefuly that you do NOT have a single unit within your enemy border before declaring.
Use 'F4' to declare, then you can move all your units within is border.

3) you really don't have to build granery or barracks in the beginning, once you finished Sun Tzu's Art of War and the Pyramid you'll have them at every city on the same continent.

Let assume that you have settled five cities.
Two of them you have FOOD bonus (cattle, wheat, Wine, Fish) I will try to build a granary and use this cities to produce Workers and settler. Other ciries will produce Units mainly warrior at the very begining but very soon you will build a Barracks in order to get veteran units instead of standard.

4) don't build cities near your enemy's property, even if the citizens of one city is happy, they can still betray you and join with your rival empire. i had this happen to me, a lot of times. i keep all my citizens happy all the time but i still keep on loosing cities to the enemy.

Well, this can happen especially at high level Diety/emperor, but according the civ and the level you are playing you can easily rush some cultural building and add a few units in cities located far from your Capital.

for [civ] only,
5) Whenever you take down a city, don't think about keeping it except when it's a new city or if it's the last city left of your enemy's territory. Raze it to avoid the citizens to revolt against you and join with its original "owner".

I like to keep the city I'm taking but again this depend on which level you are playing. If your overhaul culture is greater than your opponent culture keep the city and starve the population to one, rush a coulple of cultural building (temple, library) and keep a few units inside.
Razing cities will hit relationship with other Civ (AI).

If you don't have anything against razing/abandoning (I sure don't), then ALWAYS accept towns/cities in peace negotiations if only to abandon them;

A) Lowering the AI score a bit.

B) Creating more roads (in the open) for future movements/settlings

[civ3][ptw]
Try to make contact with the other civ's ASAP.
If on archipelago the great lighthouse could be usefull for this.

Luxury and strategic resoucres are the key to success in this wonderful game.

Beg, steal and borrow!

When you have an city on the boarder of another civ, build all things that gives you culture, like temple, library,etc...so that you can conquer others civ cities by culture.

Try to build Leonardo Workshop, so you can upgrade your units cheaper...

Buy Civilization 3-conquest..

Make an mod, with chemicals weapons and terrorism....Like kamikaze or Jihad.

Buy an laptop, and play civ3, every where, like an bar, or mall..

At least [civ3]

When starting a new game, build your city, and on the same turn start researching what you want to. You will win one turn in researching, as the sci advisor doesn't ask you before the next turn what to research.

Manage your science bar. If you have one turn to go to discovering the next advance, lower your science bar until the point where any lower would make it two turns. This way to score a ton of free gold for no extra cost in science (the science doesn't spill over to the next advance, as far as I can tell).

Using Aztecs (or any 2 move unit when most units move 1)

During the period when premium land is taken and the "mediocre" land is being rushed for, use 3 jags to "herd" spearman/settler combos in a direction more to your liking.

Don't attack, just shephard them. You can keep huge expanses "undeveloped" until you can pump out more settlers.

Want a Tip?

The Roman Empire, is Supperior. Commercial = More Money, and LESS Corruption.

Becuse I would ONLY be a Scientific Civ, if it was a RACE for The Wonders. If even then. That is why The Roman Empire, is Supperior!! Becuse all that Extra money, goes into The Science.. Not only that, but with Leigon, I get a Defence of 3, two Techs into the game,, and Leigons  , may I remind you, Remain up to date , until
The Industrial Age.

I have a Multiplayer game going right now, On 2 BIG Sepperate Continents, and I just triggered my Golden Age with Leigons, 3 Techs before Industrial Age. He got The Art of War, but I have, (Smith's Trading Company), J.S. Bachs Catheldral, Sistine Chapel, Pyrimids, Magellans Voyage, and Copernicus Observatory Located in Rome with Newtons University. Im doing OVER 200 Science in Rome at 50% He thinks he's gonna Win.
The Magellans Voyage is Not in Rome.

I play at emperor, Civ 3. I've modified the game, but I don't my changes affect this.

1. As soon as you can research polytheism, go for it. Don't be intimidated by the 28 turns or whatever it'll take. You'll beat the AIs every time, and can trade it for 2 advances and gold, or an advance and a contact. Do that 5 or 6 times, and suddenly you're in great shape.

2. Catapults are useful. Artillery are useful. Cannon are not. OK, they do some good against musketmen, but that era passes quickly, and the damn cannon seem to "fail" way too often. Never build cannon; as soon as they're available, disband all of your catapults.

If you sense a war coming, either by your choice or the AIs, set a couple of cities without barracks to building catapults. This is esp. helpful if your plan is to attack an important enemy city in order to get a wonder. The city will be well defended. At least until your 4 catapults unload. :) We all know the value of artillery, but IMO catapults are almost as good in the ancient era.

3. My best games come when I can get a settler/worker factory going early. For example, I've been trying to win as the Japanese. I've been close, but just missed. This time I think I'm going to win, and I think the biggest reason is that Kyoto had 3 grassland cows, and is on a river. I irrigated the first, and mined the next two cows. I got lucky early in the game in that I was founding my 6th and 7th cities with just a warrior for defense. I was expanding so fast my military couldn't keep up. But once I had my "territory" I caught up my military and was in great shape.

I even took Kyoto out of "expansion" mode and built 2 wonders there.

Anyway, this isn't the first time I've had my first successful game with a civ because I got an early settler factory going.

Build cities relatively close together. It may be tempting to try to space them out so they can all grow to size 20 but lets face it; they're not going to get much bigger than 12 anyway. This way you get more cities closer to your capital, less road building needed, and your cities are closer knit so you can defend them better. Also, BUILD THE FORBIDDEN CITY, you may have the urge to wait so you can have it a little bit further away so you can maximize your number of cities. Often it just doesn't get built. If you build it you can use it.

When I take an enemy city, particulary if it is near the enemy civ's capital or far from my own borders, I like to starve it down to a one and then add one or two of my own settlers to the pop. Now it's a size 3 or 5 and of mostly your own people. That way it minimizes culture flipping and you don't lose all those units you were healing in there.

Also, when dropping off a SoD on enemy shores, bring along a settler and plop a new city right in enemy territory, esp. on top of a rubber or iron. Watch them decimate themselves at your feet.

Except, if you're playing the C3C version, DON'T BUILD THE FORBIDDEN CITY!! (until Firaxis patches it)

If you build any great wonder which builds a city improvement in all your cities (ie. Sun Tzus Art of War, Pyramids) sell their counterpart city improvements. So if you build pyramids sell any granarys that you have.
