what happens if the city is destroyed?

No one controls it, then no one gets through.

BTW, having canals without a city is an option and then every one could pass, but then what would be the point of it being in the game except to look cute.
well, Suez, Kiel, Panama....

oh, i was thinking the canal was attached to the city grafic so would go *poof* and disapear aswell!

And land units couldn't pass, which would be a problem.

I have run into what appears to be a bug or a limitation.

Are there any rules that disallow two pieces landmark terrain being on adjacent tiles, I don't think so, you can see that it let me mark each tile, all adjacent to each other.

Every tile on this screen shot is marked lm terrain as you can see, but for every other tile the graphics being pulled and displayed are the regular none lm terrain.

If I copy the lm terrain files to the regular terrain files, everything fills in fine as it wrongly accesses the terrain from alternating files, but of course I do not want it on the regular terrain because then it will be appearing where it is not wanted.

The original tests were done with the regular terrain and all was fine, but go to implement it on the lm terrain and this happens.

This appears to be yet another idiosyncrasy in this game and is looking to be a show stopper.

Hi Pounder,

can you post the terrain modifications you made til now, so we can see if there is a chance to help you with this problem (may be you need some modified coast landmark tiles or some other landmark tiles in the second row, too ) ?

As you can see I have extended the plains coast on the landmark terrain for both the plain coast files. The game only wants to use these graphics for lm terrain everyother tile. If I copy these changes to the xdpc and the xgpc, then everything fills in and completes the canal perfectly, because it is getting the first tile from a lxdpc/lxgpc and the next from xdpc/xgpc, alternates there after.

If I don't use the landmark terrain (lxgpc and lxdpc) and only use the regular terrain (xgpc and xdpc) then everything displays perfectly.

The whole reason for using the landmark terrain is so you can have control over where you place terrain.

There is no second row to worry about, and it doesn't matter what you put in the second row, the result is the same. I have found that when using the plains terrain that you can put any terrain behind it with out changing the coastal tile, on the other hand grassland coast tile will change with every change to the second row terrain type.

Here is a pic (editor) with the grid on, landmark on each side and water in the middle.

I love the idea of a bridge ship. give it attack and defence of 0 and other nations can capture it.
That is a perfect idea. Only units can't guard it. Only ships could.

Would it work it you put a LM plains and an LM grassland next to (adjacent) one another?

With alot of experimenting, the only ones that are truly workable are the tundra coast and the plains coast. The problem is that you can't put a tundra coast next to a plains coast in the game at any time.

I found that you can use the tundra coast as lm terrain even if there is no lm tundra in the editor. If you place a lm forest on top of a tundra coast, then the tundra coast becomes a lm terrain and actually displays the canal, but it then goes into the same cycle as the plains coast grabbing every other tile from the wrong file (the regular terrain instead of the lm terrain file). The tundra coast was looking good because it has on one regular and one lm file, where the plains coast appears on two regular files and two lm files.

I'm thinking that the only way the canals will work in the game with this bug is to not use any tundra coast on the map (there can still be tundra, just make the coast grass) so that the regular tundra coast and the lm tundra coast can be reserved for the canal.
