My first attempt at a Bryce unit. This is a Korean Panokseon-class warship the predecessor of the Geobukseon (a.k.a. "Turtle Ship")-class warship. Though panokseons, which have been used as far back as the Goryeo Dynasty up to the Joseon Dynasty, have an open-deck, the primary naval tactics used when employing them were ship-to-ship bombardments using cannons and rocketry, which was a tactic not commonly employed by the Japanese or the Europeans in the time around the Imjinwaeran War (the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598). Panokseon-class warships are incredibly sturdy ships, built with the finest Korean shipbuilding techniques, capable of sailing the rough Korean waters. They are heavily armed with "Heaven" cannons (the largest and most advanced type of Chinese/Korean cannons) at the broadsides as well as rockets, giving them a remarkable advantage in naval combat.

Obviously, the animations aren't going to include the water. ;) It'll take a while for me to animate this thing and make it useable for Civ3 since I don't have much time these days and I haven't read Hikaro's Bryce units tutorial yet. :p

Trebuchets were fairly common in China and were the siege weapon of choice until the development of cannons. They were probably known to the Koreans as well. I think it would make sense for the Chinese and Koreans to have Trebuchets. The first cannons in China appeared during the Song Dynasty. The Koreans first developed Hwachas in 1409, which is much later and about the time when cannons were much more common in Europe and the Middle East. I think utahjazz's rocket cart unit could perhaps serve as a defensive unit since the Chinese primarily developed them in response to the threat of the Khitans, Tanguts, Jurchens, and Mongols. They weren't necessarily used for bombardment, but rather, they served as anti-personnel weapons.

Very nice model! Looks very promising... gosh, Bryce for free is such a great thing, isn't it?

Maybe upgrade to Gatling Guns later?

As for your ship, when would it come in the tech tree? What would it replace?

Perhaps the Caravel or the Frigate. It depends on how you set up your naval unit lines. Panokseons are both troop transport ships and serious naval warships so having them replace either one is fine. The way I prefer having naval units is one line for transport and one line for warships as opposed to simply having simply one single line until frigates appear.

I would suggest a few changes.
1: the sail shape. It should bulge out at the cross braces not be flat. You can do within Bryce by using a couple of cylinders and a boolean operation.
2: the sail color. Consider a more yellowed texture and more vertical bump maps to give the illusion of lines. Look at the sail I did in the title screen ship at see for some possibilties.
2: The sail braces are a bit thick.
3: the railing is one sided. I might look better if the railing was on both sides of the planking.
4: I believe these typically had a figure head. You can make one in Bryce, or I can help you if you want something basic made quickly in a modeler. (time constraints right now)
5: Civ color, got none. Maybe the railing. Or maybe part of a map on the sails. I would sugges the sails would look the best.. But you can also put some minor bits here and there since the limited images I've seen of this ship have it as very colorful. If you elect to do the sails, the simplest would be to make a single image and then chop it up in your paint program to match the sail bits you have created. UV Mapping isn't an option on Bryce booleans or primitives.
6: Guns, these things had cannons which fired cannon balls, mortors or giant spear thingies. I suggest just a cannon blast without the projectile. I would also suggest either 2 cannons (one forward, one to the rear) which rotate to fire or 4 cannons, front and rear. Not realistic. But it sorta works for the default Firaxis Frigate.... and given the smaller ship size here and how much of it will be hidden by the sails and the larger cabin house in the center... more cannons might be hard to work in.
7: general. Experiment with slightly smaller timbers up front (from the images I saw) and maybe a bit more color on the railing.

Good work.

OK. :)

1. I was actually feeling lazy at the time of making the sails. :p Just needed something for a preview. :p I'll try out what you suggest on that.
2. Same as #1. :p
3. I tried doing two-sided railings, but I didn't like the way it looked.
4. In most of the pictures of Panokseon-class warships I've seen, most didn't have figureheads. Figureheads were on Geobukseon-class ships since they doubled as flame-throwers and ramming heads.
5. I'm thinking of giving the railings the civ color. The sails is one idea, but it'd look a bit awkward.
6. I haven't decided on how to do the cannons yet, but the attack will definitely be a cannon attack firing from the broadsides.
7. This thing isn't completed yet, so it's still in the works, of course. :) I'll be making changes when I have the time. I don't know how much detail can be seen at civ-level so I tried making it as simple as possible.

BTW, you have two #2s. :p

I haven't had much free time lately, but I'll get to making some changes today and Sunday (it's Saturday in Korea ;) ).

Building models is the easy part. I just don't know how to animate. :crazyeye:

I'm sure Wyrmshadow would be willing, I know he almost always does.
I would be quite willing too. Just ask. Don't forget Hikaro is quite good with Bryce.
And, there are now maybe a dozen to 1/2 dozen others who know the basics of animating with Bryce (thanks to the recent give away of Bryce 6.0) and they.. Topgun69 certainly has figured it out based on his recent upgrade to his two Bryce planes.

Want help, just ask. Lotsa nice folks here would be willing to answer your questions. Not to mention Hikaro's Bryce tutorial thread has a number of questions and answers already.
Animating in Bryce is fairly easy... just a little hard to take the first step.

Phase 2: Added another deck, altered the sails, and added cannons at the broadsides. :)
