[Preview] Throne and Altar: A Medieval Mod

I was gonna write something about why you shouldnt drop Sweden, but I realised the scenario is based 1099-1400 AD. And Sweden wasnt much of a factor then. Viking days were over basically and we didnt become a pretty big power until later. (Then we lost the eastern part of our kingdom 1809 to Russia).

Yeah, Arbitrary Guy hasn't been around for a while. He did say that he was going to have to wait for the SDK before he would release this. So maybe he'll reappear after it gets released.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to work on anything for the last two months, and I won't be able to do anything for another three or four :(. I guess that's what you get when you're a graduate student with qualifying exams next month will determine the rest of your career.

I'm still very excited about this project and wish to continue it the future, but it will be a while until I have the free time to do so.

I'll be frank on where this project is right now:
I have prelim version will cities and unit placements. I'm happy with the tech tree. I have many buildings, units, and wonders done. I have the framework and mechanisms for adding events very easily. So, I'm probably 60-70% of the way to a beta release... but keep in mind, I won't be able to work on anything until July or August. Who knows, maybe the Warlords expansion will have a good Medieval Scenario?

Note: I now seriously doubt SDK will add anything to what I'll do (or am able to do).

:goodjob: Thanks for the continued interest everyone!!!

Real life is more important, and I wish you good luck on your exams and with your carreer.

It is interesting to notice the timespan on this mod: 1099-1400. I am just beginning a new mod that I've had planned for a while (but have just expanded the scope), and it picks up around where this mod leaves off: from the end of the 14th century till about the 16th/17th centuries. However, this mod focuses solely on Eastern Europe, and their battles with the Ottoman Turks.

I d'love to see this happen.:D

But Shqype is right. Once the serious things have passed...leisure is more fun.

Wish ya luck.:goodjob:

this looks really great... a shame that you'll be busy and all..but thats life.. :)
Sweden and Denmark did some work in the crusades... i dont know about norway... but i guess they were just as silly-crazy-aggressive as the rest of scandinavia at that time..

It's just terrible to know that something as promising as this, will be paused for some months... I hope you'll find the time to finish this afterwards...
Good luck...

Thanks for the Best Wishes.

In the meantime, I'm still going to brainstorm a bit, though. I'd love to compose a list of events, triggers (e.g. date) and possible effects (both global and country-specific) and would enjoy any suggestions anyone wishes to post here. I'm aiming for maybe 10+ events per civ. They shouldn't be too radical though, I still want the player in control.

A few ideas of what I mean:

Global Events
Mongol Hordes - Mongols spawn
Black Death - kills 1/3 population in all cities
Avignon Papacy (1305) - Catholic Holy City moved from Rome to Avignon
Council of Constance (1414) - Catholic Holy City moved back to Rome

England Events
Wycliff & The Lollards - Religious unhappiness in England (maybe spawn a little "Protestantism" for a while)
1381 Peasants Revolt - Spawn peasant revolters in English lands

Please submit any ideas for events... I'll compile them later. I'll be in and out of this conversation.
Here's current civ list to help:
Kingdom of Aragon
Kingdom of Castile-Leon
Kingdom of Denmark
Kingdom of England
Kingdom of France
Kingdom of Hungary
Kingdom of Jerusalem
Kingdom of Poland
The Turks
The Almoravids
The Baltic Pagans
The Byzantine Empire
The Holy Roman Empire
The Kievan Rus
The Mongols
The Papal States
The Saracens
The Teutonic Order

Council of Constance (1414) - Catholic Holy City moved back to Rome
Hey pal, now you're getting into my territory! :p

It's alright man, I'm just joking. Even if you went a little after it would be good ... adding in more than what the scope is helps make the game more fun ... it helps by giving a player something else to do, instead of playing a game with 50 turns left and every faction having every technology, etc.

CK? What's that? Country Knowledge?

Haha, no. Its Crusader Kings, a game by Paradox Interactive. It follows the same timeline as this mod. They made Europa Universalis 2 and some other really good games that are historically based. I know that for EU2 at least it has a lot of scripted events that you could look through to get ideas for this scenario. EU2 is probably the best game I've ever played overall.

Yea, I was introduced to EU2 and I have it. Perhaps it will have an influence on my mod (or maybe it already does ). I was happy with their decision to make the Albanian leader Gjergj Kastrioti the 2nd most powerful leader in the game, 2nd only to Napoleon. That's pretty historically accurate

If you like EU2 then you should immediantly go get the AGCEEP (Alternate Grand Campaign Event Exchange Project) mod right now. It really improves the entire game quite a bit. I mean alot. Here's the website for it: http://www.agceep.com/introduction.htm

I know that the mod I'm working on is going to be pretty heavily influenced by EU2.

Wow , seems cool! I'll have to see the modified map. This did get my attention though:

Q: Why isn't Ragusa represented? Why is that province Albanian?
A: Ragusa don't fit well with the game engine, and would behave in ways it didn't do in history. A good point is made here, regarding free cities. The province represents North Albanian, with cities like Cattaro etc. The name is very unlucky though.
When I played the vanilla Grand Campaign I observed that combining the provinces of Ragusa, Kosova, and Albania would create roughly the ethnic Albanian land still inhabited by Albanians today. It seems they more or less moved toward that goal. Thanks for letting me know about this!

EDIT: Which one do you recommend I install for these desired changes? The base or deluxe version?

PS - Why don't we speak and let each other in on some of our "secrets" for our mods? I'm sure we can exchange some good ideas ;)
