So I've had Civ 4 for about a year. I've messed around with it and have recently gotten pretty into it. I am mainly interested in the scenarios. I love history and it is just more fun for me to play as nations similar to an accurate geographical location. That being said, I have a few questions.

I recently won a Civ 4, 18 Civilizations Campaign on Noble by Space Race with Germany (Frederick). It wasn't too bad, won by quite a bit. My strategy was mostly take over Rome, then France, then i grabbed Spain. Held off Russia until I won. This wasn't too challenging for me so i decided to give Prince a go. The story changes..

I started up the game as Louis (France) on Prince. I didn't create any new cities. The map is too congested with 18 Civs. Instead I grabbed Mysticism, built stonehenge, and kept going for The Oracle slingshot. Not long into the game, London flipped cultures and became my second city. I kept grabbing wonders left and right and eventually Berlin also flipped. The point for me to expand didn't really come until my borders were touching both Madrid and Rome. I knew my culture would never flip them, so i quickly crushed Spain (Isabella is absolute garbage in 18 Civs...no port, never more than 1 city). Rome was a little bit tougher, but i eventually grabbed Rome and Cumae (settled in Sicily). From there on out I figured I had it made. I had a number of good cities, many resources, and I figured I could out tech the other leaders. I was wrong...

Catherine hated me all game. She went to war with me. I didn't have an army at this point. Luckily Germany was a middle ground between Russia and I. I gave up techs for Frederick to attack Catherine, and then techs to the Mongols and Mansa Musa to attack her as well. I then built up a small army and marched on St. Petersburg. (this was around the cannon point of the game). I defeated the city, but knew i couldn't hold it, so i ended up razing it. (this might be what did me in). Catherine accepted terms for a truce. All was good.

Then, as son as Catherine got Cossacks, she went to war again. I had infantry at this point, and defended Berlin well enough. The war was annoying, but again I got the better of it. I continued teching for space race.

But of course, India. Asoka seemed to avoid every war and never lost a city. He teched all the way and he somehow was faster than me. He was too far for me to reasonably war, since Catherine was always close to attacking me.

Of course, Asoka and I were building the final parts of our spaceship, pretty close, when Catherine attacks me. Her planes destroyed every one of my tiles. My production to Paris dropped over 50%, and Asoka won by 6 turns.

I don't know how I could have played a much better game. I couldn't keep up relations with Catherine even before I razed St. Petersburg. So now I am looking for advice on beating Prince. Is there anything i need to completely revamp for playing on Prince?

Paris ended the game with something like 90,000 culture. I spammed wonders most of the game. It was easily the best city I've had in any game. I just don't know how to out tech the AI's at this level. I did a number of trading and used all the tricks I could. I had all my cities not creating space ship parts researching for the techs.

Anyway, I am looking for some guidance. Thanks.

1) what were your spies doing?
2) how were you using your GP's?
3) Did you specialize any cities for MilSpec?
4) Air defense?
5) Tac nukes are your friend

Need a wee bit more info bro :) I'm sure others will have additional questions. Post a save, and let's see what's up.

Why did you build Stonehenge as a Creative leader? It probably would have been better to put those hammers into a Warrior rush or something.

I think the key is to rush Rome, England, Spain and perhaps Germany as early as possible. France is perfectly situated for a Chariot rush. France starts with The Wheel and Paris has very good production. Worker first and tech Animal Husbandry. Mining, Masonry and BW for utilizing the production potential. Don't even bother with Settler in very early game, but invest all hammers into Barracks and then into Chariots. There wouldn't be anywhere to settle anyway.

Try to set some goals. For example - control 4 cities by 1000 BC and 8 cities by 1 AD. The first milestone would most certainly involve military conquest. Once Rome, Spain and England have been rushed, you can settle additional cities in Southern Italy, North Africa, Scotland and Ireland.

One really useful wonder besides The Oracle is The Great Lighthouse. After building it, France can become a wealthy Mediterranean trade empire.

Hmnn, all strats have plus/minus to them. Since germ has no starting warrior, and he usually sends his scout to explore, I usually send my warrior for an insta city while building another warrior as a 1st build to prevent Rome from doing the same.
AH for 1st tech, beeline bronze for the whip, tech sail for galleys/chariots rush for England. Need to take them out early or their PHI slingshots will make it a PITA for you. Hit Rome before Prats, then Spain to consolidate West Euro. After that, it's open season.

Take a couple of capitals and earth 18 becomes easier.. russia and persia are the biggest threats on my games, but still..

You can do it whenever you want, if you dont mind cheese you can even warrior rush your neighbour on earth 18, they dont start with archers whatever the level.

Thats a tad cheesy, i have only done it once on that map (as roosevelt on monty lol)
