Prison sentences in Europe too light for murderers?

Are sentences for murder in Europe too light?

IF they're not getting the death penalty for murder and rape (Hello, Roman Polanski, I see you!) and some other crimes, then yeah the sentences are too light.
Chinatown is one of my favorite movie of all time.

In Wikipedia:
The victim, Samantha Geimer, during a TV interview on March 10, 2011, blames the media, reporters, the court, and the judge for causing "way more damage to [her] and her family than anything Roman Polanski has ever done." She adds that the media were "really cruel," stating that the judge was clearly using her and a noted celebrity for his own personal gain from the media exposure

Sentances for all sorts of violent crimes here are way too light, sentances for all sorts of stupid things like not paying bills shouldn't exist at all. You see people getting three years for rape here, it's a joke.

I am pretty sure it is still legal in Belarus and Russia.

It's suspended or somesuch in Russia

I wish they would actually enforce the maximum sentences for gun and knife crime here.

Sentence for murder starts with 8 years here. If you plead guilty and waive your right to trial, you can get 1/3 off.

Jeez give him a break sometimes we just need to let loose, get coked up, and accidentally ride a teenager.

I do know Norway's max sentence is like 19 years.

Now, I know some European countries aren't as bad as others though. But any who have abolished Capital Punishment are too soft on crime, and easily so.

Capital Punishment is very hypocritical. Why don't we just have a state rapist for rapists too!

That'd be great craic.

I'm pro-life! Let's kill anyone who removes any sort of life whatsoever! Uh, what?

Oh? They do have that already in some places.

Oh, good, because there's usually excellent justification for most terminations.

I don't knwo if I ever saw any "early" EastEnders. Saw some on BBCAmerica, though. Busybody wife...ugh. The Piano...you mean that movie about the adulterer?

I've not seen the Piano. It's supposed to be good though.

Early Eastenders - you ain't missed much. Lot's of arguing

"You slaaaaag!"

"Who are you callin' a slaaaag, you slaaag!"

etc.

That's London, Paradigm. You don't need TV for that. :)

:rotfl:

This seriously undermines the value of human life.
*facepalm*

I think its more likely that less killings are based on other factors, not low sentencing. Do you REALLY think a murderer is going to think "Gosh, that sentence for murder is really light, guess I won't do it?"
You're right, it's mostly based on the low levels of social and economic inequality they have in Europe. America sucks at that too.

A proper system of rehabilitation is also a contributing factor, which is why Norway for instance has not only a low murder rate, but also a low reoffending rate.

21 actually. And believe me, there are many problems with the penal system in Norway, but I think ~20 years for murder one is an okay punishment. But I don't know how early and easily they can be released on parole.

I am sure it is not the only factor.

I doubt that a better rehabilitation system would change the murder rate much at all.

No, it needs to be coupled with better education, social programmes and judicial reform.

He sent some angels I think to tell her about it (maybe that was after the fact, dunno).

Leslie Grantham was doing OK rehab wise until he was caught masturbating on a webcam. EDIT: Dressed a a pirate, I think.
