Civ4 is here for a long time with open core (CvGameCoreDLL) and scripting (XML/Python).
There are a lot of mods created. There's a problem that mods are conflicting and need to be hard merged to be used simultaneously. Great mod like BUG made this.
The only problem is that it is hard to discover useful mods.
I am not much interested in alternative game universe/rules as I've spend time on studying references/formulas for BtS and don't want to throw knowledge of game mechanic for some horsehockey mod.
I am interested in time saving mods, that:
* reveal game mechanic by showing stats and explaning underlying calculations. BUG mod (as a collection of tons of other small mods) is here. BULL seems has nice combat advisor widget (I can't find download page but use it as bundled with K-mod).
* helps with testing (cheating for experimenting) - enhancing World builder (if any?), reveal AI stats / decision
* helps with switching save difficulty or requirements to load with specific mod.
* helps organize save files so I can keep quick saves for different games in parallel (save to different folders, better save file names (difficulty/leader/#city/era/turn) )
* Better AI. I started to play with K-mod because project advertises improved AI over other old tries.
