I just recently had a nasty virus problem that forced me to finally reformat my entire laptop. as a result I am now reinstalling all of my lost programs and games, with civ4 being my recent reinstall.

The problem happens half way through the install, i'm asked to insert disc 2. however when i insert it, nothing happens, the install remains stuck at the end of disc 1, and often times instalshield crashes.

I've combed the internet for an answer to this problem and can't seem to find one, and as far as I can tell there are no error's logged that seem relevant. (though I could be wrong) So if anyone here could help me out I'd really appreciate it, I really want to play civ4 without having to go out and buy it again or anything like that.

Edit: found an error that might be relevant, here's the info: AppName: _is82.exe AppVer: 12.0.0.49974 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5755 Offset: 00010f1e

Have you tried installing the game on a different computer?

have not tried that yet, don't really have one available to do that on either, the only other computer in the house that could support it is a business computer exclusively so i can't install it on that one. But it was installed fully on this computer before.

You're running the install as administrator, right? (She said, assuming this is Vista.)

Running XP and I'm the admin since I'm the only user on this laptop anyway.

additionally I tried deleting the setup folder from common files, as another forum suggested, this did nothing to solve the problem in my case. I'm up to date on all my drivers and all my windows updates. and as I said it used to run just fine pre-reformat. Just don't get why it won't install now that stupid "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" is becoming the bane of my existence.

In most cases, you still need to specifically run it as admin, even though you are the admin account. It's a Windows weirdness.

According to "User Accounts" under control panel, I am the administrator, so shouldn't it be fine?

Not sure if this matters, but when I insert disc 2, for some reason both control panel window and the d drive window (containing datacab 3) also open. Not really sure why it does that, but maybe it'll give someone else a clue.

Not always. The easiest way to avoid problems is to right-click and run as admin. Much less frustration at times. :)

well i just tried the install on a friends computer, this time at the same point i got a catastrophic failure.

also when i try the run as admin it wants a password, i've never set a password up on this system, but it insists on one so not sure what to do about that.

It sounds like you have a scratched disk or something, maybe also a DirectX problem.

If you have never set a password for admin use, the password should be just blank (That's how it is with Vista, anyway). Try pressing "Enter" at the prompt. If that doesn't work, you'll have to go into your user accounts and somehow override the password. I don't remember how to do this on XP, sorry.

no funny noises, but i think you're right about that. I'm just going to go buy complete and call it good I think lol. I want colonization anyway.
