I've downloaded RoM recently and have tested it once on a huge map : I really liked it. But when I tried to load a giant or gigantic map the game crashed (during the graphic init). My computer has 2Go of RAM, a 3GHz CPU and a 512M graphic card. Does anyone know why it crashes and if I can do anything about it ?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

2 GB RAM? Forget about giant and gigantic. 4 GB (3,3 efectively used, if you run Win XP), and 3 GB switch is a must. I'm sorry, pal.

I tried to start a gigantic map with 50 nations, due have 4GB ram, but no go... makes me wonder, if anyone have a computer, which can handle this? :)

but the giant earth map with 31 nations scenario, works fine.

IIRC, one of the Unofficial patches used by RoM and AND has a limit on # of Civs that you can use, 48 I believe is the cap. After that you have .dll problems.

This may have been changed in the recent versions, but no one has really talked about it.

Quite frankly using more than 28 CIVs even on a x64 OS and more than 4GB of ram is asking too much from the normal computer on a Giant or Gigantic Map.

Scale the number of AI back to 10 and see if it works. (Leave Barb CIV off). If it will autorun into the 1900ADs you should be good to up the number of AI for a real game. But I Strongly suggest do Not go over 20AI. Or you'll be back saying it's too slow.

I've got a x64 OS and I use 8GB of DDR2 1066 ram. I don't play more than 20 AI. In fact I've found that the optimal number of AI on a Giant maps is ~ 12 AI (with no Barb CIV activated). If I use Barb Civ and Barb World the optimal number of Starting AI is 8-10.

I almost always use the RoMsmartmap script. I don't remember the size of the map exactly, but it's 5-6 steps higher than the last named setup (huge? gigantic? ginormous?). I usually do it with 75-90% ocean, so that navies are somewhat important. Don't really run into much slowdown until the industrial age. I'm sure the future era is cool, but the game is usually over by then.

On my old PC, 32bit XP, can't remember the video card, but it was an AGP card, 4GB RAM...I would have to keep the maps in the large area, and it would still slow down significantly towards the end of the middle ages. A huge map in vanilla would slow down quite a bit.

My new PC is a Phenom II 955, 8GB RAM w/Win7 x64, and 2xATI 4870X2's. Dual screen setup, running in windowed mode. Usually with a few tabs open in Firefox, a couple IM windows, and occasionally an Eve client or two running. It's awesome.
