When to load I have a message "Txt_Key LoadSave File Protected"
How to deal with a problem?
Help! I dont know what does it mean.

The WOTM 02 forces the programm to run off.

It means one of two different things I think.. either you dont have v2.08 patch installed, or you have some modified files in your assets dirs in either warlords or civilization4 directories.. common reasons would be using civscale or applying the hotseat fix.

(If you didnt have the correct HOF mod installed then you would get another error I believe)

It sounds as though there is a problem with an XML file. The error should be a sensible message in the language of your choice, not "Txt_Key LoadSave File Protected". If you have installed a language mod then you will get this failure, and it could account for the failure of the message text as well.

In the English version it should say:

"The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed".

The other standard language versions are:

I have not been able to play any WOTM or GOTM since I installed HOF Mod
for Worlords and Civ IV

Please can you give us some more information? Firstly, step by step, what happens if you try to load a GOTM or WOTM save?

I am also getting the "The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed" message. However, I have just re-installed Warlords, Installed the 2.08 Patch, and the Hof Mod 2.08.

I DID play around with my Vanilla CIV, e.g. I installed the "bigger ships" and some Modpacks from this Website, but the Mods shouldnt affect it as they are in the MOD folder, and the other things were not altering game play. I can start the latest GOTM with 1.61 and HOF 1.61 009.

What am I doing wrong ? Where should I start looking ?

Unfortunately, the asset protection system can't make the sort of judgement that you are making when you state that your mods don't affect game play. It just adds up a check sum for all the files in your Assets folders and decides whether it comes to the right value. If not, you get that message.

If any of your installed mods changed any of the standard Civ4 vanilla Assets files then they could prevent the save from loading. However, it appears that this is not the case if you are able to load the current GOTM. Therefore, it seems you must have some modification that affects your Warlords Assets files, either in the Warlords/Assets folder or in Warlords/Mods/HOF-2.08.001.

Reinstalling Warlords and the HoF Mod will not necessarily delete all existing files, so I suggest that you delete your Warlords directory entirely, then reinstall Warlords and the HoF Mod. Remember to get version HOF-2.08.001, as there is a new one now available that is not compatible with WOTM 3.

Hope this helps.

My bad I had the wrong HOF updates.

Thanks

OK now I can play GOTM but WOTM game crashes with this error, I have loaded and installed HOF
versions 2.08.001 and 002,:

Error Signature: AppName: civ4warlords.exe
Mod Name: 2.0.8.0
Mod Ver: 2.0.8.0
offset: 00e090b

And to send to Microsoft this info on this error.

Can anyone help

Thanks -
but unfortunately, still no success.
I completely uninstalled Warlords AND Vanilla, deleted all folders except my save files and the replays. Then installed Vanilla, plus patch 1.61, plus Hof Mod HOF-1.61.008 and HOF-1.61.009. I am able to open the corresponding GOTMs.

Then installed Warlords, and WOTM 1 (version w/o the HOF Mod) worked.
Upgraded to 2.08, and installed HOF MOD 2.08.001, and still the same problem with WOTM 3.

What now ?
a) Think I'd like to try if I can open HOF-version of WOTM 1, and WOTM 2, but cant find the corresponding HOF Mods, seems as if they were removed already ? Can I still get them ?

b) I started a new game with the HOF MOD 2.08.001, and I got a warning that the game does not qualify for HOF competition. It said something about CRC (checksum issues again !?) and "not locked modifiers". Does that ring a bell ?

c) There is another issue that cant possibly be the reason (can it ???): I play from my home office PC, and the darn thing insists to put all save files etc into the "My Documents" folder. However that folder is not local, but a network drive, i.e. awfully slow, and as I dont have admin rights, I cannot change it to a local path ("Properties" - greyed out) think they do it for Backup purposes). Therefore I have to unplug the network cable before I install CIV, and whenever I play (otherwise it will create all these annoying shortcuts to the network drives, and the game takes forever to load/save, or even crashes). I did get an error message during Vanilla installation, saying that the "My Pictures" directory cannot be found, but I never noticed any graphics missing, and even if so... Could that be a reason (but again, Vanilla is fine) !?

Never mind.
I tried today at my computer in the office - and it worked fine.
Went home in disbelief, started Civ there, and it worked, too.

Only thing that changed on my machine was that I installed Heroes of Might and Magic V in the meantime. This is Magic must have done the job  .

Anyway, with only 3 days left to submit my game, I better RUN !!!

thanks for your efforts, btw !!

All problems have been solved by another version of Warlords. It seems to me that my licenced programm was bad.

Meanwhile it's clear what the reason for the whole problem is - my User Home is a network drive. I have been playing Vanilla "offline", by simply unplugging the LAN, installing it offline and playing offline, and that worked well even with the HOF mods.

With Warlords however, I can play "local" games the same way, but the HOF Mod generates the error message and doesnt let me open my save files.
So I can only play when connected to my user home / network drive, but that makes everything so slow, that it is virtually unplayable, and it keeps freezing up.

I am currently at 1100 AD or so, and with 6 hours to go, wont be able to finish the game, even though I am pretty sure I will win this game. The fight against the hardware is much tougher than the AI.

My only hope is if anyone knows a way to force CIV to ignore the "user home" and let me put all this files somewhere on C:\ instead of this darn \\nys003\...\my games\Warlords\Assets etc. I checked the Ini Files but no luck.
Any idea ?? I'd like to play the emperor game Augustus, GOTM on Regent Level sounds not too exciting. Please HELP !!!

Try to rightclick the 'My Documents' folder and select properties.. and see where the target is set to..
if you cant change this.. then make a copy of the warlords shortcut, rightclick the new shortcut, select properties and after the Civ4Warlords.exe part, add:
ALTROOT=C:\somedir mod=\HOF-2.08.001
you will have to change the mod part for WOTM4 thou to point to HOF-2.08.003 instead

Thanks for your help, Gyathaar. I did the "Altroot" thing, and when starting WARLORDS, the game replaces all the shortcuts that were pointing to the network with shortcuts to the C: drive. E.g. C:\civ4\Warlords\Saves. So far so good. But starting the game, connected to the LAN, the game still looks for the network and freezes after a few turns.

Disconnecting the LAN, I can start WARLORDS and it takes only half a minute instead of 3 to load. But then the Hof Mod complains again.
The other funny thing is that the language randomly changes. On the office machine I had picked the German installation, my home PC has English. Now I get English text but German sound.

I'm not going to bother you any more with this, just one last question:
is there a post that describes better the file / directory structure of CIV4 ? I.E. I suddenly see now a directory C:\civ4\Warlords\My Games\Warlords\Saves\single. Why was this created, as WARLORDS upon installation has already a save file directory C:\civ4\Warlords\Saves\single\auto. This was probably the consequence of the ALTROOT command.

So now it puts the AutoSaves into C:\civ4\Warlords\Saves\single\auto but it puts the HOF MOD created Savegame file ("File on Exit") and "Autolog.Txt" file into the C:\civ4\Warlords\My Games\Warlords\Saves\etc.

It also says that any new game I create doesnt qualify for HOF because CRC is missing and the Locked Modifiers are not on. The more I think about it, I believe this is a bug in the HOF mod.. Again. the Vanilla Hof Mod works fine any doesnt show this problem.

The HOF Mod uses the registry to find your "My Documents" as everyone's is different. I.e. with a normal install, save files go to "C\Documents and Settings\<User Name Here>\My Documents\My Games\Warlords\Saves\single". If you are playing GOTM then the HOF warnngs don't matter.

Hi Denniz,
thanks - but that's exactly what I meant - the HOF Mod is insisting to find my CIV files in the "My Document" folder, and I dont understand why ? I dont have them there, and I dont want them there as it is a network drive in my office and I dont want a "My Games" folder on my work machine for obvious reasons. Bad enough I'm always late for work due to gaming all night ;)

CIV comes with its own directory structure, so shouldnt the Mod check these ? But of course, then someone could cheat by having a local installation to satisfy the HOF MOD check, but have the game use an altered version of some files in the "My Document" folder.

However when creating the "Save on Exit" file, the MOD puts it into
C:\civ4\Warlords\My Games\Warlords\Saves\single. Regular Autosaves however go to
C:\civ4\Warlords\Saves\single\auto.

Key questions: why is the MOD not checking the C:\civ4\Warlords\Assets files, instead of trying to find something on my remote, disconnected "My Document" directory ? The Vanilla Mod .009 seems so much smarter, there these issues dont exist.

So still I'm able to play GOTM, but not WOTM. I would understand if none worked, but as the vanilla mod works and the warlords does not, there should be a solution somewhere. I hope...

The shortcuts to you network drive you mentioned before is usually reflected by a folder structure created in your My Documents folder. (Ie. My Documents\My Games\Warlords\etc.) the config file, save files and customassets all there. The HOF Mod assumes you have a normal installation and will put any save file where it expects to find them: My Documents.

The My Documents code in the HOF Mod for vanilla and Warlords version are almost identical except for the game name differences. (i.e. "Sid Meier's Civilization 4" vs. "Warlords") So whatever you did for vanilla must not be the same for Warlords. In any case, the HOF warnings shouldn't stop you from playing WOTM. If you can start a game with the mod then it is probably working okay. The save file and autolog are optional an need not be turn on.

I am not sure pointing the altroot back to the install folder is the best choice. That might be why you get the protected assets message when you open the WOTM file. You might want to create a folder called "C:\My Games\Warlords" and use that for your altroot instead. You will want to clean up anything that was put into the install folder before trying this. A clean install might be better if you are not sure.
