I just replaced my home machine with a 27" iMac with the HD 5750 (1Gig) graphics option. When I try to set the screen size to 2560x1440, the resolution changes as expected and I get the usual dialogue box asking if I'm happy with the change. When I click the "yes" button, however, the program locks up and I have to reboot the machine to use it again. Has anyone else seen this problem (or been able to use the 2560x1440 screen resolutuon)? I've tried this a couple of times on Vanilla, but I haven't tried Warlords or BTS yet.

Have you tried using the Command key when launching the game to bring up the display options dialog box? That's a Mac-specific settings window, and you may be able to set the resolution there before the game gets going.

Thanks for the suggestion; using the pre-launch settings window allowed me to change the resolution and now everything appears to be working. For the record, Warlords and BTS do not have this problem; I was able to change the screen resolution in the game without problems.

Hmm. Maybe they fixed that in the expansions. Vanilla was the first port of the Civ4 codebase.

Even for an old Mac user, you posit one hell of a question. Thought about it, did a bit of research and experimentation, and--the envelope, please--the result is:

  1. Multisampling error. Be sure you are running the current release of OpenGL.
  2. Assuming you have nvidia graphic cards, possibly the DisplayPort (and Mini DisplayPort?) does not support the full 1080p HD. System Profiler reveals this information. To resolve the resolution problem simply download the appropriate drivers at Apple Support or NVIDIA at http://www.nvidia.com/content/global/global.php.
  3. The Simple Solution? If the 2560x1440 'native' screen resolution is engaged for your iMac, do as follows--open CIVILIZATION; click ADVANCED; click OPTIONS; (be aware of the popup warnings that appear after choosing certain selections, to which, yes, you click YES) and click settings that match your iMac and your Preferences; go to graphics tab, select and click 2560x1440 resolution, click YES; Exit to Desktop or Quit.
  4. My only suggestion if this does not work is to reboot in 'SAFE' mode (restart, hold down the SHIFT KEY) then repeat the above process. Good Luck.
