I've always had a huge problem when playing the Civ series, that I've yet to conquer since I started playing the series (from the first Civ onward), production.

My problem stems from the fact that I usually build economically and forgo a military, but I enjoy beating the game through conquest over culture/space race/whatever.

I was hoping some of you people could just give me some tips on how you build up your cities and how much of a military you produce as opposed to straightout city improvements?

I'll usually spread out as fast as possible (I almost always play on huge maps with full opponents) until encountering another civilization, while colonizing the area around my capital. Depending on how well my starting cities grow I'll usually have about 6-10 cities before focusing on building them up instead of colonizing (which I realize is another mistake I shouldn't forget about all that extra land, once I was on a large land mass with two other civs, one right next to me on the northern half, and one on the southern half, I conquered the civ next to me which gave me control of the lower half of the land I was on but never bothered with colonizing the rest, which cost me in the end, I just never seem to continue colonizing even though I know I should do it), and then I start building up any city improvements or wonders I've researched.

If I'm feeling threatened I might build a few small military units (besides my city defenders which I usually use spearmen (actual amount depending on how close to my border the city is and what government I'm currently using) and follow their upgrade path) but usually I don't have a single roaming military unit produced until I've got a city that has all it's improvements finished and even a few wonders done.

So I'm just looking for tips on how you people play hoping something will help me find a way to get over my damn purely economic focus. (Which isn't a bad thing, I've beaten Civ III on Diety before by focusing on my economy, but I still love a good war over anything else)

Welcome to CFC. :)

I'll suggest for you to look thru the excellent strategy articles we have in the War Academy for a beginning. ;) They're in the subforum at the top of this forum... Reading thru threads helps too.

As for actual gameplay, Civ3 is more warlike than ever. You'll need a significant military - if only to deter the AI from attacking you. ;)

Edit : Well, if you've beaten Civ3 at deity level, I really don't see why you still need help. :) I've never even played emperor.

When I go to war it is for a clearly defined objective, even if that is just "put the hurt on the Greeks" or something. When you define your objectives clearly they can become more important than another city improvement. If they aren't then why go to war?

Also, I would second Knight-Dragon's analysis. I often go to war because a close neighbor has just moved a big stack o' units into my territory. Doesn't this happen to you?

My problem is building up the forces to start a war, I keep enough defensive units (and workers for when my roads/rails are ravaged) to defend myself from a large attack, I just never keep an active military to fight back. More often than not I play the diplomatic game or end up having my border cities focus soley on defensive units while I go for the culture kill with my inner cities.
