Project: Arda Mod (LOTR)

Here are some preliminary concepts for LOTR faction flags. Let me know what you think. Some I love, some I'm not happy with, but I don't want to poison the well by saying which is which.

Please keep in mind:

- these are preliminary concepts
- most pics (or ideas) come from source material, much however is improvised
- the mod authors may not set up factions in this way; this is just some of the groupings noted here and in other materials

Hello,

I have created some techs for Elf civ... Have a look in my library if you have time...
(Elf Archery, Palantir Communication, Elf Iron Working...)
:)

Great flags, Wyz_sub10. Some of the civs you have created flags to aren't in the game, but most of the flags can be used for another civs (for example, we don't have Moria and Erebor as different civs as they are both Longbeards, but we can use their flags to the Firebeards and Broadbeams, of the Ered Luin, and to the Longbeards. I have found some interesting heraldry for the Silmarillion kings and clans, and they can be good flags.
I have started the civs and have already done the new traits, The Shadow and Doriath (complete, with flags and leaderheads). I'll finish it soon, but as I'm without Internet on my PC (right now, I'm at a school's computer) it may take a while to post it.

I was thinking about the victory conditions. We should not only remove the Space Victory and the UN victory, but also to add new ones. I thought about putting a War of the Wrath victory (build many parts, like spaceship), a Silmaril Victory and a One Ring victory (perhaps using the treasury hunt from the viking scenario).

Unfortunately beyond very basic xml changes I don't think I'll be much use, but I can do some xml stuff if you want.

One generic change I would suggest is adding an 'idle' process for cities:

10% of hammers to wealth, research and culture
Available from start of game

Basically to give cities something to do when they are not building anything (and before other processes such as wealth are available)

I have added this to regular civ4 and found it very useful (I got the idea from the 'real epic' mod)

I have been looking through Civ4's files some more, and it should be possible to add some Middle-Earth insignia to the Warlord guy sat on a rock in the Warlords main menu, which would be a cool little touch (it should also be possible to change his skin tone to green to make him look like an orc, but that might look a little off)

On the UN, we could leave it in and re-name it to the 'White Council'

On the victories: Time, Conquest, Domination and Cultural fit in just fine...the 'building stuff' space ship victory could be changed and included too, like you say, the War of the Wrath victory is quite a cool idea...but I would prefer building Great Rings or Silmarils. So yes there afew ways that you could win by building stuff, but we must choose one as multiple victory conditions of the same type would be redundant, IMHO.

I haven't played the Viking scen so I'm not sure what the treasury hunt is?

Hi all.
This is an awsome idea. I loved the silmarillion. I believe I can help with the religions, though.

About valar cult (including dwarvish Aulë's cult) I believe it would be, in Arda, completely wrong, because Eru was God, and the Valar (except from Melkor and his servants) were completely submited to him and would not want, not even allow, being saw as gods.

This is only part true. The humans (the good ones at least) did think of the Valar as gods, which is stated somewhere near the beginning of the Silmarillion. This could be made into a religion, even though the Valar themselves would be opposed to it.

Sounds great. Sorry if it has been mentioned but have you thought of having a limit on the tech level so you never go past say Knights and Swordsmen, no Musketeers, etc. It would feel much more like LOTR with the cap on tech. I also really liked the banners above. In the area of wonders you could have things like the Trees, Orthanc, Houses of Healing, Helm's Deep, etc., great places like these act as wonder (to be built) with benefits. The Wonders for LOTR would not loose their benefits because all things are revered and either upkept and updated or cannot be surpassed. Maybe some unique resources like Mithril. Possibly animal units for the Shadow like Wargs. Just some ideas I hope you like.

To thomas.berubeg. Near the bottom of the first post it mentions that it is for Warlords but will post first for vanilla as it is developed. I missed it the first time myself.

Also had some ideas about UU's. Upgraded axmen with Mithril for the Dwarves. Special Longbowmen with say Mallorn Tree resource for Elves. Men would be the only ones able to have Knights. Of course Elephant (Oliphaunt) riders for Haradrim (Ivory for Elephants and of course it does not expire), etc.

I have a freind who is writing some diplo music for a LOTR mod. do you want me to post them here?

I don't have warlords, so I can't say anything about the main menu screen, but this kind of change should be done only in the very end of the mod. The White Council would be a great idea if we could make it "restrict". It would be strange if Morgoth or Sauron were members of the WC.

This is only part true. The humans (the good ones at least) did think of the Valar as gods, which is stated somewhere near the beginning of the Silmarillion. This could be made into a religion, even though the Valar themselves would be opposed to it.

The "good" men, the edain, culted Eru. The "bad" men were servants of the shadow. The middle men, like the rohirrim, didn't care so much about it, and Tolkien did not wrote anything about their beliefs.

Yes, great!

Strategyonly's map is very nice and all, but it is actually quite inacurate for the Middle-Earth setting. Sorry.

OK whats wrong? I got it directly from Tolkiens in 2001?

The Anduin is one large river that is uninterupted by land (Islands but no land crossings). Mordor is mostly a desert land except around the Lake of Nurnen. Mordor is also completely encased in mountains except to the east, the city of Minas Ithil (Morgul) and the Teeth Of Mordor (Udun entrance to the dagorlad). It is actic conditions to the north of the Grey Mountains. You left out Mount Doom (Orodruin) or I missed it, sorry. There also seems to be alot of lakes that are not described on the maps or in the books.

Don't get me wrong. It is a very good map in itself that I have enjoyed playing on. Not that long obviously, but I have. It just isn't very specific in the actual regional terrain thats all. The unfortunate thing is the map you are using does not properly describe the terrain features. Great map, just not detailed enough colour wise.

I liked the fact that you put more hills in Rohan and along other places that you do not see in other maps. It is more realistic in that regard. Also finally is the resources. Extreme amount of them to be sure.

Great work on the map, and I will continue using it, but it seems that this particular project is going with great amount of detail and it seems that your map is just not accurate enoung IMO.

No offense intended. This is just my opinion of course. Keep up the great work on the maps. I do enjoy them.

On the topic of maps, if you guys can somehow get a hold of the old MERP (Middle-Earth Role-Playing Game maps by ICE (Iron Crown Enterprises) they would be of great help. Very detailed and specific in terrain and town location, mountain passes, etc.

I have a question about the maps. Which era are we using? the Slmarrion era, or war of the ring

That's a great question. The only place I know that has all the maps of all the eras are of course the books, but in more detail in the Atlas of Middle-earth. Great resource if you can get it as well. merp.com has a couple of good maps as well.
