Promise Broken?

Not so much a bug, as just really bad AI. Your troops are x hexes away from his borders, therefore, you're a threat. You offered to move them, but didn't move them x+1. Of course, since x is never stated, you have no idea how far away x+1 is, so your troops are still in range, and thus, you broke your promise.

So what your saying is I get to look forward to being an international pariah this game..yay!

Rome complains, I move my troops. Two turns later he declares a joined war with Germany. I fight him off on our border, he offers peace. And a few turns after that I get a diplomatic penalty for not moving my troops.

Yeah there are some diplomacy issues that need to be addressed. Hopefully it will be reduced to a realistic tile count in the near future

I don't remember promising anything.

I think the game is extremely unclear here. If an AI asks you wether to remove your troops or declare war, and you say "My troops are just passing through", this apparently counts as a promise to remove your soldiers. But the game does not tell you this.

I'm not sure if "Ignore this request" can lead to the same broken promise, but I don't think it does.

If you keep ignoring the request you can get denounced as well, happened to me

Hopefully, the declaration of war by the nation making the request voids any promise entirely so the mechanic isn't broken. The progression of events he described is utter nonsense.

Moving your troops away, then having the AI settle near them and "breaking your promise" is similarly something that has no place in the game whatsoever. These are not mechanics that should be part of a non-beta game release until they're finished. It's both fake difficulty and sloppy, to the point where its presence is a net negative for the title. If it can't be made to work, don't put it in...

In the current build; if you have a city that touches the border of the AI making the request to move units away from his borders; you should always ignore it because the range includes tiles within your own territory.

There is a mod that lowers the penalty for ignorning border warnings. It makes the game playable, at least

The one that gets me is "you are not clearing your barbarian camps"

This is not a promise but an agenda, but those can get pretty silly too. I had Norway praise me for my impressive navy. I had zero ships.

Yes it happened to me too; the reason was "refused to make a promise"

I managed to actually form a long lasting friendship/alliance with Japan in one game by some miracle. It didn't seem to really do anything that special though. They decided to declare random war, probably as a join war, with Spain out of nowhere. Joint wars seem to be a strong factor in a lot of war declaration silliness. They aren't sensing weakness or anything, my military far outclasses theirs.

Of course Spain and Japan didn't feel the need to actually send any troops my way. Just declaring for the lols I guess. I took their money when they eventually offered it.

Right now in my current game almost everyone is now unhappy or denouncing me. Part of the diplomacy logic of an AI hating you is they will ask for large gold per turn with nothing to return, then get pissy when you say no. I'm not sure why they do this, I guess the logic is "if relations are bad, offer worse deals in trade" so at the worst relation their offer for anything is just zero? I'm supposed to take their crappy offer to win back their respect? Their respect which has zero value for me and will easily be wiped away when they randomly decide to declare?

AI doesn't like you breaking some stupid promise? Well, it's not like their promises have any value. Just ignore them. Slam the ESC button over and over whenever their animation starts to appear because whatever they have to say is not worth your time. Maybe you weren't planning to go for a domination victory this game, but the AI will do everything in its power to tempt you in to it.

right now it is pretty much pointless to befriend any of the AI's. so just push them around and if they get in your way destroy them :P

They do this sometimes when their border grows and units you've left in sleep mode are now +1 hex closer.

I have to agree with bladex's comment though. All the AI players start in my bad books now, it's only the depth that varies.
