So, I have the opportunity to promote my anti aircraft gun.

It can get a bonus for rough terrain, or even terrain.

Should I select the one where aricraft are hiding in forests or hills, or where they are parked in open ground?

(Okay, I know they can fight ground troops, but that in itself is strange. Discount the 88 mm and anti aircraft guns fight aircraft).

The biggest factor in your decision should be what terrain you are most likely to be fighting in. If the terrain of a prospective battlefield is hilly, then go for Drill. If it's open, go for Shock. I would say that Drill would have a slight edge over Shock given no information about your surroundings, because AA are not going to be used offensively that much. So you're more likely to be parking them in rough terrain, and maximising their defence would mean taking Drill.

The point I am making is that anti aircraft guns should be blowing aircraft from the sky where there are no hills or jungles. A better promotion would be accuracy against fighters or bombers.

Well they can get Cover (which should work defensively against aircraft trying to attack them, since that is a ranged attack.) And you do need your aa to defend themelves if they are attacked on ground.

You have no idea how hilarious that comment is at 5am in the morning xD:D

It would be nice if AA units had a different promotion path than the melee units.

It might even make the AI use them better.
Agreed. And I think it would be interesting if all units get some unique promos. So for example swords won't get formation as quickly as pikes & rifles would. Some units will unlock promos earlier while other have to put more effort in getting it. :)

This and this. Having a promotion that makes it more effective against aircraft (offensively) would make sense. But not necessarily at the expense of being able to select melee promotions as those have a use, too.

if they were to get new ones, then I'd also add the 'must setup' requirement. It's not like they just wandered them all over the place and could shoot constantly.

AA always works best when in a fortified position.

Setting up would be a good way of doing it, I guess. Ranged units have to set up, after all, so it'd make far more sense if AA did as well.

The AA I usually play against, especially when AA first comes out, so often uses them as offensive melee units, so for them the upgrades make sense.

It is only later, when my Bombers are rampaging, that they tend to do the job they were intended to do.

It would definitely be a step forward to have unique upgrade paths for all units, as the AA unit is not the only unit to suffer from this problem. I would also like to see thought put into the upgrading promotions issue so that a unit doesn't lose out on upgrades when they are promoted either (for example Crossbow to Riflemen).
