Since 2K's recent update of the Civ V launcher, the desktop icon only launches the old DirectX 9 version of the game.

As far as I can tell the only way to launch the proper version of DirectX is to launch the game directly through the Steam app.

My way is using "legacy" in Beta section on Steam
Then right-clik on the menu and create DX11 Desktop Shortcut

I have the same shortcut issue and have only been able to launch game m directx11 from within steam.
When I run the directx9 version the right ~25% side of the screen shows up as nothing but a grey bar. Think it's related to EUI and screen resolution.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that a shortcut fix is nice. Thanks!

Just to check. All you do is:
  1. Write ineedlegacyaccess
  2. Enalble "Beta Participation"
  3. Launch the game and create Desktop Icon
  4. Use Desktop Icon from now on?
I'm asking because my game wouldn't launch at all after trying and in the end all I could do was reinstall. Are you on Win11 as I am? If so I'll propably give it another go.

I always launch from Steam and never encountered any problems with legacy launcher.

I am on windows 10, but yes, that is what worked. When you click on the icon it brings up the very old launcher. Possibly the original one. I select DX11 from there and go.

Finally fixed this on my side.
Note in steam you need to choose correct launch option to see this menu.
Choose the one with no option "Play Sid Meier's Civilization V".
The desktop shortcut will ofc still launch steam in the background but you dont need to start steam first.
