Pyramids

I ususally build most of the wonders -- Pyramids will be about the 3rd or fourth that I'll go for of the ancients.

Pyramids are one of the first wonders I go for...

Pyramids are the best distraction for the AI civs early on; let them build it while you focus on SSC wonders or Hanging Gardens. It is far better to control your cities growth with WLTCD, which is much faster.

Unless you gave a wierd GOTM start like Fundy...

Nah, I'm with the Pachyderm. I'm much more interested in SSC wonders, Gardens, or MPE early on. The food-loving AI goes after it so hard, I don't even get around to thinking about it before they build it most of the time.

Pyramid can be captured later if needed; Hanging Gardens and Colossus MUST be in the right city to pay off big time.

Pryramids are by far my favorite wonder, single player, MP, whatever. If an AI is about to build them I will build something else first (and try to capture them as soon as possible). On Diety I will sometimes go for the Hanging Gardens first but depending on the situation I may skip them over and try to go straight to Mike's Chapel.

Pryamids are the best ancient wonder because they last and having fast growing cities makes all the difference!

Even on Emperor level, let alone Deity, I prefer Hanging Gardens to Pyramids. And I don't build Granaries either.

In Monarchy, HG is kind of like Colossus, extra trade arrows, and permits all cities to be larger. Once in Republic, the cities grow more rapidly with WLTK growth than Pyramids.

I think of Pyramids as a security blanket that prevents cities from shrinking when they build a Settler and have negative food for a while. Of course, it also helps cities to grow to Size=3 more quickly.

Pyramids are usually the first wonder I build.
By the way, I know WLTK "normally" allows a quicker growth of the cities, but I never noticed it, even if there's food surplus : according to the manual, WLTK days double this surplus, but it doesn't seem to be the case.
Is it a problem with my version of Civ 2 (2.42, CiC) ? Or do I miss something else ?

WLTK(ing) implies you are still in monarchy. Celebrations in monarchy will give you more Trade in the cities, but not more food. The key is to get celebrations in Republic or Democracy. You won't get more food, but you get one extra citizen for every turn you stay in celebration and have a food surplus. This leads to explosive growth across your entire nation as many cities can grow quite rapidly in just a few turns.

Titi was quoting WLTK from GaryNemo, who should have used WLT"Consul"Day for Republic growth. WLTCD growth is very powerful, but since you are in Republic you have to watch citizen happiness and cannot use martial law to quell it. Happiness improvements, wonders and Luxuries are the keys. WLTCD does not change your FoodBox surplus, except that each extra citizen still requires two food.

I LOVE the pyrimads, Free granarys? Come on that is a great wonder.

Essspatialy good with a large civ

Pyramids are massively cool at King and lower. On Emp, Diety, fast growing cities early in the game can be a problem, happiness wise. If you build them early enough to beat the ai, your cities will produce red faces before you can build happy improvements. Building military units for martial law takes time and money needed for the improvemnts and wonders you need to celebrate in Republic. (Not to mention the wastefullness of a bunch of military units that do nothing but stand in you cities.) In theory, I know I should break this deadlock by amping my taxation to make money faster and rush build everything, but in practice, I cannot slow down my tech because there are so many I feel I must get (Monarchy, Mono, Theo, Phil, trade, republic).

HG + Colossus in one CIty will beat Pyramids - growth by WLTCD or WLTPD. I only build it when there's nothing left to build. Nice to have, but there are far more important wonders,. e.g. the Lighthouse or Marco Polo's.
Supposed you have the GL and Pyramids and I have the Hanging Gardens and Colossus - no doubt who will win

Thats the beauty of trade. By pumping out caravans, you can generate enough coins and beakers to maintain a fat treasury and keep getting a tech or more per turn. And, you don't have to conquer your enemies, you just buy em!
