QSC-c1 "Irritated Mao" game progress.

@Jaxom

I was about to say that's without counting cracker's data, but aye, if I read correctly, he researched Cavalry, an optional tech (!) Will he GA be enough acceleration to pull ahead? Will his monster save files allow him to finish the game and see?!? Should be close!
Also, hugger of verdant forest things, nice example post for stwils questions :p

@Steve
Once the 'final' data is in and charts posted for turn 120, and some discussion, we can do the 'later' turns. I'm failing completely to see the need for a different thread for it, but I have a kinda spam-free attitude against creating new threads.

Charis

@Charis

It remains to be seen if the removal of valuable tree hug... er trading partners played against you later on. I did get some tech from the AI and I finished my game without fighting a single war.

@LKendter, other :scan:- look a few pages back- I posted a placeholder first, and the data soon after on Friday afternoon. Everything should be there. I try to let people know I'll be a little later than usual... and they end up missing it when I do post it anyway- oh well. :p

Those placeholders are almost always missed when updated.
It doesn't show up as a new post, and will be skipped.
I gave up on placeholders a long time ago.

Lux is the number of luxuries currently connected to the capitol while New is the number added in this round. Imp is the number of luxuries imported.

A red background in Lux Tax means I had to raise the slider to avoid disorder on the next turn. I will not try to guess what the player would do in that case, I will just raise the slider until all cities are happy enough to avoid disorder. An orange background is the other way around, I was able to lower the slider and still keep all cities happy.

# spec. is the total number of specialists (slackers :p) in the empire. A green background indicates a minimum science gambit in progress, meaning at least one of the specialist is not a slacker.

Total comm. is the amount of commerce generated by cities on the Domestic Advisor screen, excluding any other type of income. Expenses lists various expenses, from the same screen, in this format: entertainment/corruption/maintenance/unit cost. A green background in Income indicates a Golden Age in progress. Ratio is income divided by commerce, somewhat measuring the efficiency of the empire in the context of the fastest space ship launch strategy.

Top cities list happiness factors in the top 2 cities in the following format: happy pop/content pop/unhappy pop:Military Police-Luxury resource happiness-Building Happiness.

Borealis: 3 luxuries to her name, and she even managed to get most of the furs despite the ugly orange city of Canterbury.
She currently needs 9 tech and 7 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Charis: As expected from a warmonger, a huge empire and high corruption. 3 luxury online and another one in 1 turn that should allow to remove all luxury tax. Sistine Chapel will complete in 1 turn and will double the efficiency of his 0 cathedrals. The Forbidden Palace was built in former India but it will take some time before the area truly contributes to the empire. The question is, will the space race be over by then? The Golden Age probably started only a couple of turns ago, if libraries and univerties are built during that time, it is likely Charis has reached the 4 turns/tech for good. But the Genghis clan has an obvious disdain of literacy, as shown by the library/universities census. :p
He currently needs 5 tech and 1 turn to reach the Industrial Age.

Cracker: 2 new luxuries added meaning he his now in control of the 4 local luxuries. However, one of the luxury is a colony on a road far from the core and needs to be defended. The high maintenance cost for units seems to suggest a military shift, but in fact it is a very high number of workers.
He currently needs 5 tech and 3 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Hotrod: A promising young leader who fell in the warmongers trap. ;) 2 luxuries online and another one in no more than 5 turns will help improve useful income. The current Golden Age could be wasted in regard to fastest space ship launch if the current military trend continues.
He currently needs 9 tech and 4 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Jaxom: 4 luxuries online allows him to concentrate on research. With libraries built in many towns and universities under construction, it is likely he will reach 4 turns/tech by the next tech. If all goes well, the Great wall will complete in 6 turns and trigger a Golden Age.
He currently needs 7 tech and 4 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

LKendter: The lack of enough luxury is seriously taxing his net income. Two more luxury can be added but they will require some kind of military action. With Sun Tzu built and Leonardo in construction, that may well be what he has in mind.
He currently needs 7 tech and 6 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Meldor: 3 luxuries online but will need military action to gain control of another one.
He currently needs 9 tech and 11 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

SJF: 4 luxuries online, one of which was taken by force. The current GA supply a 4 turns/tech rate, if he pushes the right infrastucture during the GA he is likely to keep that pace until the end.
He currently needs 6 tech and 4 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Steve: 2 luxuries online, some cathedrals are in construction to help with happiness. A 3rd luxury will be gained soon as a pack of riders, on a hill near an English town, are discussing the best food to serve with wine. This will also trigger is Golden Age and give a boost to his economy.
He currently needs 9 tech to reach the Industrial Age and is not doing any research.

Stwils: 2 luxuries online, no more unless force is applied. Hangchow needs an entertainer because it is not connected to the road network. There is a worker sleeping on a nearby hill, he should be kicked back to work on the missing road. By putting a clown in Hangchow, I was able to lower the tax to 20%, saving 17 GPT. England would trade wines for her furs and spices, allowing another 10% cut on the tax and saving 12 GPT. Beijing is building a Colosseum, it is rarely worth the shields it costs. Beijing should be building a marketplace to help improve income, which would also help with happiness if she does buy English wines.
She currently needs 11 tech and 6 turns to reach the Industrial Age. The lack of contacts is hurting badly here.

Swiftsure: 3 luxuries online and one other will be connected in 1 turns. This last luxury was taken out of Elizabeth's hands by force. 3 specialists, all in London, following a strict diet.
He currently needs 6 tech and 7 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Theos: 2 luxuries online, will need force to gain more.
He currently needs 10 tech and is not doing any research.

Zenga: 2 luxuries online, one more in no more than 5 turns, that should allow a 0% luxury tax. Few libraries and no universities, some cathedrals were built before universities, delaying the year Zenga will reach 4 turns/tech.
He currently needs 7 tech and 3 turns to reach the Industrial Age.

Current standing toward a space ship launch (5,1 means 5 tech and 1 turn to reach the Industrial Age):
Charis, surprisingly is first with 5,1! Golden Age in progress.
Cracker at 5,2. No golden age yet, building Cavalry.
SJF at 6,4. Golden Age in progress.
Swiftsure at 6,7. Golden Age in progress.
Zenga at 7,3. No Golden Age yet.
Jaxom at 7,4. Golden Age scheduled in 6 turns.
Lkendter at 7,6. No Golden Age yet.
Hotrod at 9,4. Golden Age in progress.
Borealis at 9,7. No Golden Age yet.
Meldor at 9,11. No Golden Age yet.
Steve at 9,none. No Golden Age yet.
Theos at 10,none. No Golden Age yet.
Stwils at 11,6. No Golden Age yet.

OK - everyone is in for turns up to 120.

I know this is the cutoff for cracker and the QSC. The question is how do we wrap up and REPORT the rest of the game?

I have Mao up to 730AD with a good chunk of Industrial age techs, ToE / Hoover play in the works, and the thought of launching. I have multiple research centers on the way that should complete before the Modern Age keep 4 turns a tech.

I'm about 3/4ths of the way through with the graph data for 570, 370, 170bc but I have had to take a short break because Ghengis Charis uploaded his 370AD save file by mistake and give the score keeper a freekin heart attack.

It must be hard to see the correct dates on the save files with all that blood and entrails hanging from your computer screen. ;)

:cringe: :wallbash: :vomit:

I knew something was DEEPLY wrong if I leapt out ahead of
cracker!! At least I got to spice up his day, and for a brief nanosecond he truly understood the power of the way of the Genghis.

Now, alas, the sluggishness of his warmongering ways are EXPOSED!!! He is smack dab in the middle of the pack, with about 8 techs to go, no golden age yet.

The REAL 370BC save

The REAL 170BC save

In his defense, the Genghal one points out that the commerce from his somewhat sprawling if not bloodstained empire almost doubles all competition!

Er... wait, no, that's several hundred years later then the rest of you?! :spank:

Even then, in the future, it *STILL* seems that...

"Sistine Chapel will complete in 1 turn and will double the efficiency of his 0 cathedrals. "

and...

"But the Genghis clan has an obvious disdain of literacy, as shown by the library/universities census.

Still.. the Genghis does not give up and throws all he has at the
upcoming space race!! See you at Alpha Centauri!!

:ar15:

Charis

Ah! I am dumbfunded. I couldn't figure out how you got ahead of me but never looked at the date.

When you get to Alpha Centauri, the merciful Ming Dynasty will have created a reserve on the far side, for your kind to enjoy ;)

I finished last night, launching my space ship in 1480AD (I'm sure nearly everyone beat that date).

Well I just finished, and while I won't give away the exact date yet - I will say I launched an ealier century ;)

Ok, here I go for the space race.

As predicted, I built the Great Wall in 50 BC, triggering my golden age. The AIs researched gunpowder and astronomy for me, all other middle ages tech I researched in 4 turns each, entering the Industrial Ages in 280 AD. Economics is optional, but the AI researched it and I was able to build Smith. I also got Newton but I lost Copernicus.

All industrial age tech were researched in 4 turns each. TOE was built the same turn a tech was discovered, so I lost no turns waiting for it to complete. The AI discovered Sanitation just in time as I was about to enter the Modern Times. Hospitals were cash-rushed and workers were merged as needed to keep at 4 turns pace. The modern times began in 840 AD.

I brought the scientific civs to the Modern times with me, one of them getting Ecology and all others getting rocketry. After researching computers in 4 turns, I was able to get both ecology and rocketry in trades. Unfortunatly, no AI discovered any modern times tech before me, so I had to research all of them, in 4 turns each. The Apollo program was built in 1040 AD. I researched Synth fibers last because I hoped an AI would research it. They didn't so it took one turn after discovering it to complete the space ship parts.

Launch date: 1170 AD.

Well, it is clear to see were the gambit of filling outside in has left my empire. I had wondered if grabbing those points far from home and then backfilling would be good or bad and this answers it. The extra growth you get from the lowere corruption counts even in the early going. I think I will have to play a more standard opening in the next one. Most interesting.

Launch date: 1170 AD.

OUCH! I thought my 1315AD was a decent date, but I was blown out of the water. The trick of getting the AI scientific civs forward for free techs was quite good - I will use that next time myself. That would bring my launch window to 1280, a lot closer to Jaxom.

It will be curious to see where the rest of the pack winds up, and if cracker beats 1170 AD like I suspect he will.

Oh well, once cracker starts posting the details how he does the score I will be offering a round myself ;)

I lauched in 1410 AD, had tech for some parts but forgot that I couldn't build any parts until I built apollo. Would've been sooner if I remembered to build apollo first and researched Space Flight at the first possiblity (that's what I get for playing unitl 4 am  ). Maybe could've saved 7-8 turns. No where near 1170AD. Well done Jaxom: :goodjob:

Hotrod

I made a few blunders after 170BC (in addition to the ones before) - mainly due to the fact that I already had a totally won position by then. Such things as turning on research halfway through my Golden Age, not connecting luxuries and trade routes quick enough, and by and large ignoring the other civs until my cities got to size 18 and needed luxury imports so that I could keep luxury tax at zero.

I pull this sort of BS when I'm playing Monarch level. Had this been a Deity game, I would've taken a lot more care and probably done better.

Anyway, I built the Pyramids at some absurdly late time (around 600AD I think), then snagged a couple of Middle Ages wonders before getting a monopoly on the Industrial/Modern ones. I was doing 4 turns per tech well before the Middle Ages were over (having Newton's in Beijing helped a bit there).

Entry into the Industrial Age was late, around 1000AD if I remember correctly.

Here's the final situation...

Needless to say, in the tradition of most spaceship successtion games, I built an arsenal of ICBMs. These were used as placeholders for spaceship parts, or simply left to complete. Having won the game, I had the following left lying around in my cities...

Well, Persia had been stupid enough to sneak-attack me in the Industrial Age. They even took a city from me, but it was recaptured the next turn. So I let them have it...

Since I was bored, Hiawatha and Lincoln got some too...

zenga space race

Reached the Industrial Age in 330AD - the AI only helping with Banking and non-essential techs.

Steam Power and Industrialisation (6 & 5) were the last techs to take over 4 turns. Corporation onwards in 4 each, in this Age the AI never got to any space techs first but gave me the rest.

Radio would have taken 5 turns but completion of the Hoover Dam in 920AD kicked in the GA and gave it in 4 (it was 2 to go and dropped to 1). Modern Age entered in 930AD.

Got all the Sci Wonders + Colossus in 1 city. Also got Bach's and all Wonders from the Industrial era on.

All modern techs were 4 turns apiece, the Sci civs all getting Rocketry. The Apollo Program was built in 1190AD. All other techs were self-researched with the Laser the last researched in 1280AD.

Launch in 1285AD.

I think the time I lost most ground with Jaxom was in the timing of the Golden Age. Previously, I've had trouble keeping 4 turn research going at the start of the Modern Age (before research labs kick in) and so I waited until the late Industrial era before starting mine. With hindsight, it would have been better to use the Great Wall and hurry the Uni's then.

I also had no wars in this game and only 1 English city flipped to me. No riders were ever built! I never bothered expanding beyond the sub-continent we started on, even when no oil showed up in my lands (I was tempted though! ).

For anybody that's interested, here's a couple of good threads for early Space Victories, giving loads of info on tech rates, number of cities required etc. (and yes, I plundered several of the ideas there!:p ).

Tournament Vet Division Space Race

Tournament Elite Division Space Race

@cracker: great format for a game and very interesting to see how other players styles deal with the same situations.

@LKendter: good luck with your own QSC. As a suggestion, would it be possible to have one with a Conquest/Domination victory condition as the goal? I reckon this would make it a good bit different from this game, offering a different perspective. I have a selfish reason for asking this since it is the part of the game I am least comfortable with!:D

@Jaxom: :goodjob:

@Arizona Steve: that sure is a lot o' nukes!:lol:

Edit: dates for GA and entry to Modern Age.

In case anybody is interested, here is a look at my empire the turn before the launch.

York and Dover flipped to me, York was emptied by making workers to leave more room for Shanghai. A couple of Indian cities flipped to me but they were rebuffed.

Final score: 4835.
