QSC Results - Games 21 to date

Oooohhhhhh ..... nice shiny new tool to suck away my few remaining free hours. Excellent job guys! :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Please note:

This resource is only as valuable as the data from *your* games that we can include. In the last 18 months it's quite possible that a few files have been lost or overwritten or lodged in the wrong places. The old submission system was more prone to file losses in the past as well, as it depended on players correctly identifying the game. A wrong selection could result in a previous submission being overwritten.

So if anyone spots they their entry is not represented, or has a 1000 BC file that they would like to be added, please feel free to email a copy to me at gotm_submit at gotm.civfantics.net, including your player/forum nickname, the game ID and the timeline file, and I'll endeavour to add them as soon as possible.

Submitting save files i have no problem with, i just don't like to write down every damn detail i do for 80 turns.

I just want to know what i am required to do in order to submit for the gotm (without getting a score penalty)

And if i need to submit anything more than save files (i assume, -1000, final and maybe 0 and -2000), when will it start to be required ?

In other words, i am not really interested in the whole thing since i don't feel i need to learn anything from other peoples games (and its ok with me if people want to learn from my game, but not if that means writing down every detail i do) I just want to know what will be required to submit for gotm.

I don't seem to be able to get the City Location maps to display (although the other summary statistics such as #units display just fine). What's the trick?

 :worship: :band:  :thanx:  :goodjob:

This is sweet, this is exactly why I like to submit the QSC. Although, some of mine seem to be missing from way back, I don't care. Just going to concentrate from here on in now.

Thank-you again!

@WackenOpenAir:

Nothing has changed.

You may submit a QSC entry or a GOTM/COTM entry or both. A GOTM/COTM entry does not require a QSC entry, and you can submit only a QSC entry without completing the game.

A GOTM/COTM entry requires one save file from the turn after your victory/defeat (or turn before if you were conquered). You should keep a few intermediate saves from around 1000 BC, 50 AD ... in case we have queries about your submission and ask to see additional files.

A GOTM/COTM entry does not require any write-ups or participation in the spoilers if you don't want to. If you upload an additional file with your GOTM/COTM entry it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever see it. The facility is there purely to cater for people with the habit of uploading extra files from the past. Some people don't like change ;)

A QSC entry requires a 1000 BC save file, and will reject one with any other date.

Sorry WackenOpenAir. A QSC entry also requires a timeline file, and your entry will be rejected if you don't include one. QSC timelines *will* be looked at each month in future, though the ones linked from past games have not been checked extensively.

Timelines should, as a minimum, log all the major decisions and events during the first 80 turns - initial moves and worker actions, scouting decisions and discoveries, build orders, research actions, contacts, trades, wars ..... "Why" is at least as important as "What".

A cheesy QSC timeline like "Played 80 turns, researched a bit, killed a barb or two, built 20 towns." doesn't cut it. The reason is this is not primarily a scoring exercise. It's a teaching tool. Scores are used so that different approaches to the game can be compared simply. The first 80 turns set the scene for the rest of the game, and without the write-up it is impossible for others to see how your game reached the 1000 BC state that is snapshotted by the raw data.

QSC timelines can be submitted as text, html, spreadsheets, Word documents. Just remember that anything you submit can only be read by people with the relevant software. Everyone around here can read text and html documents. Some people may have trouble reading spreadsheets or MS Word files.

The QSC was the way I learned to play CIV, and performance in the first 80 turns pretty much dictates the rest of the game. I think that the QSC is a very valuable part of the GOTM event and I am delighted to see it back.

Good job guys.

I can only second this, most heartily! Thank you to the entire staff, and to Cracker, whose reign it was at the time. A few PMs to / from him started me down the QSC line.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
:thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx: :thanx:

(It's certainly not a big deal, but my QSC 21 seems to be missing from the list. Were any game submissions lost in the process?)

I developed an excel sheet to keep track of movements and actions. If somebody tells me how to download things I can post it...

O thanks, Killer.
I want to try to participate in this, but I also do not want to describe every detail. So I appreciate anything that could help.

Now how to download it. Go to the bottom of this page. In the right corner you will see
upload.jpg

Click upload file. New window will open. There is a statement that only gif, jpg, zip, sav, net, ace, pcx, png files are allowed. So you may need to zip your file before uploading.
Browse to find your file, then upload.
In the next window click on “View Current Upload Folder”
Find your file there, click on it, copy its location and then paste it into your message,
Thanks in advance,
Sol

They are plain ol'fashioned jpegs. What browser are you using? I'd be less surprised if you said you can't see the bar graphs - they are .png files and very old browsers may not know how to display them.

If you still have it and the timeline (or even a link to your Spoiler 1 post for that game) I can add it. Send to alanh at gotm.civfanatics.net

Are you kidding me? Often, I could not explain to myself why I did a particular move. And very frequently I move first and then I think: "Why did I do this? :hmm: Am I stupid?"
If I will be thinking about every move, and then will be describing not only moves, but also my thoughts... This will take forever.

I can try :hmm: Maybe it will be fun or maybe I will :suicide: after a few turns.

Timelines are great. Yes you play those turns a lot slower but it also helps to focus your thoughts. Also serves as a great learning tool. I have replayed a couple of SirPleb's timelines move by move to help increase my opening play. And based on where I placed in the few QSC I submitted I can tell I still need some work. Timelines notes are also the reason I switched from playing van Civ III to PTW, because you can rename your troops and it helps your notetaking.

@Alan - I have timelines from the games that I did not submit before the QSC cutoff. I'll send them to you.

Do you have the game files as well? I'm not sure whether a timeline alone will fit into our format very well, and I don't plan to try to create QSC score data manually from timeline info.

Well, not for every move . Major decisions should have reasons though :hmm:

One of the goals of the QSC is, I think, to learn to think before you move. :p

For those interested Moonsinger created a Word Document that I use a template for QSC recording. It's quite nice with expandable fields and numbered (count & date). I'll attach it (with the minor changes I made) to this post.

On the naming your unit front, I've a couple of conventions I try to use:

1. Keep the name short (typing Ajax W is a lot easier than Penthesilea W)
2. Keeping the unit type in the name (Thor - Warrior) will help if you upgrade the unit and have it in a stack
3. Just because I'm a MCP, I make my workers have female names (Ann, Bee, Cat...)
4. When you create a 3-worker stack, use the acronym for the group (Workers Ann, Bee & Cat become ABC)
5. Create a hardcopy of the names you like to use and use them in order (it's saves time at 2am instead of having to think of a new name for that 10th spearman)
6. I like to have certain name types for each unit type. Examples: Warriors are Greek & Norse warriors like Thor, Ajax & Odin, Archers are Orion, Robin & William spearman have Roman names like Maximus, Claudius & Brutus (these longer names don't move much)

That makes it simple enough. Thanks, denyd! :)

I reached 1000 BC in COTM04 but too late to send it in. If there could be a flag 'not competing' or some such then we could send the timelines of games, that didn't qualify for the competition, too. It's the timelines that are important and the more the merrier!

Thanks, Denyd.
It contains 81 turns. So does it mean that all moves should be done in 1000BC and then corresponding save should be submitted?
Or save can be submitted before any moves?
The difference could influence the score, since you may lost units or capture cities during the turn.
