By the world map, I mean the Caribbean (not in battle mode). Two questions.

1. Do the various ships' speeds affect their speed on the world map like they do in battle? I'm fairly sure the answer is yes.

2. If the answer to that question is yes... Does only the flagship's speed matter in you fleets speed on the world map? Will keeping a Merchantman ship for cargo along with your Sloop flagship slow down the fleet? So, say I have a Sloop and a Large Merchantman. Say I have to sail from Florida Keys to Puerto Cabello. If I sell off the Large Merchantman, will I be able to make the trip faster? Does which ship you appoint as flagship affect speed on the world map in any way?

Yep.

It won't slow down your fleet unless you use it as a flagship.
If I sell off the Large Merchantman, will I be able to make the trip faster?
No it won't, as long you have enough people to man every ship.
Does which ship you appoint as flagship affect speed on the world map in any way?
Yes. The speed of your flagship determines of the speed of your fleet. A lot of people use the war canoe as their flagship because it is the quickest ship in the game.

One advantage of the war canoe is that you can dodge anything thrown at you. Many people use it as their primary attack ship.

Ah, excellent to hear that big merchantmen don't slow down my fleet as long as they're not the flagship. I will stop selling them off before making long voyages now.

Lol, everything is possible in a game. :p

That canoe looks like firing cannons from it should dismantle it or make it capsize.

Well honestly you should always look at the directions the wind is blowing. If you go against the wind you will slow down considerably, While traveling with the wind gives you far better speed.
I myself can out run any vessel with the slowest ships. It is all about knowing how to sail in certain waters.

A war canoe for a flagship?

How many cannons does it have?

So, why don't other ships slow you down? It seems like a fleet would move at the speed of its slowest ship, not at the speed of it's flagship.

On the lower difficulties the wind blows from the east to the west like it does in the real Caribbeans. On the higher difficulties the wind is randomized more, making the bigger ships harder to use.

Mail Runner FTW!

So, how do yo travel East on lower difficulties without getting mutiny'd?

First of all, your fleet moves at the speed of your slowest ship. People use the war canoe as their flagship because it is the fastest and most maneuverable in battle and also presents the smallest target. It is by far the best ship for capturing enemy ships, but using it won't make your fleet faster on the world map.

If you dont believe me, run one of your ships over a reef so it is damaged, and then see how much slower your entire fleet is as it constantly slows all the rest of your ships down while it struggles to keep up.

You travel against the wind by zigzagging at 45 degree angles against it (you also go faster if you sail with the wind at a 45 degree angle from the rear than you do with a full-rear wind).

On journeyman level winds dont make any problem if yu use pinnaces, sloops first then using frigates. Mostly the wind goes to west so attack only from west other ships using one of these fastest ships as flagship. Yu can easily board them without doin damaging cannonfights. If yu captured some ships you should sell them at a friendly port as soon as possible becuz they slow you down very much. The best ship is the Ship of Line. this SoL-Ship is not so easy to get but is the cool best for late gaming when you dont wanna divide any plunder loosing playtime and wait half a year for a new expedition

Good to have it confirmed and it makes sense.

Welcome to Civ Fanatics. :)

I'm not so sure, actually. Your point about damage is true. But in my experience, the fleet moves at the speed of the flagship as long as the other ships are undamaged.

Get a fleet consisting of a pinnace class (war canoe/mail runner) and a big slow galleon. Try to sail into the wind while switching between them as flagship. Your fleet will move into the wind much better with the war canoe as flagship than with the galleon.

Seems to me that all ships in a fleet sail at their own pace, but if one lags behind then the rest of the fleet has to slow down and wait for it. So I'd agree mostly with Dunsparrow.

Yes it will, untill the galleon gets abit behind and you even se the text on the sceen
"wait for me" and your flagship slows down untill it has catched up.

Might not look much on the game screen, but the ingame time show alot of differense sailing from for example Curaco to Barbados with a Galleon on trail or not.

On another note, do you still post game reports on your homepage? Loved to read them back in the day.

Sure, I see this happen when the galleon gets damaged. But rarely with a healthy galleon. Maybe 5% of the time. But you would expect a galleon to be slow and trailing behind a war canoe 100% of the time.

I've read that more ships do slow your flagship, but only the number of extra ships matters, not their type. Try with a War Canoe leading a War Canoe, versus a War Canoe leading a galleon. They will move at the same speed.

Oh, if only Pirates was as transparent and moddable as Civ 4.

Sure do. Not for Pirates, but I play most of the Civ 4 events at Realms Beyond. There is an event closing just tonight in fact, watch the reports subforum for that, and older reports are there too if you like.
