I've never done a gotm before. Is there anything I should know and/or need to download before I play one? Thanks

Welcome.

You at least need to read and understand the gotm28 game introduction pages at http://gotm.civfanatics.net/, and you should look at the rules on that server that govern behaviour during the game and what you can and can't post as spoiler information in the forums.

You'll need to download and install all the add-on files for your version of Civ3 - 1.29 or PTW 1.27 in your OS (windows or Mac OS), and you then need to select and download the correct start file depending on which Class you want to play in - Conquest, Open or Predator. Then you play, and then you go back to the gotm server to find the game submission form to upload your winning .sav file.

If your sig is seriously suggesting that a 1000 AD industrial age is rare, I would also suggest you do some background reading in the spoiler threads for some of the recent games :mischief:

There's a reference post listing links to significant sources of information here.

Hey, I was thinking about trying the GOTM, but a couple of questions -

1 - Dang, that's a lot of patches. I read up on what they do and don't have any trouble with that, but can I go back to playing the unpatched Civ3 afterwards? Or am I stuck with a new scoring method?

2 - I'm just a casual player. When I win, I win, and I don't go through any gyrations to increase my score other than try to finish as early as possible. Is keeping track in order to submit a score worthwhile? Or are all the top scores claimed by regulars here already since they know how to milk the game?

You can go back to playing the unpatched Civ3 afterwards by swapping resources files - your original for the most recent patch - as explained in those patches.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "keeping track." If it's notes on your game, that's up to you, and how involved you want to be with the GOTM community. Keeping notes on the QSC is necessary to submit a QSC score, but not a final game score. The QSC is a great way to improve the crucial early game. But if you're not interested in doing that at this time, skip it and just play the game.

And on a separate note, milking has very little to do with the Jason scoring of the GOTM. n Your score is basically determined by a combination of speed of win and size of your empire.

By "keeping track," that's what I meant - I could just play it for my own amusement without taking a lot of notes, or a detailed accounting in order to submit a score. If some sort of "milking" was necessary to get a top score, I'd just play for fun. The last time I played a GOTM was probably ... 2 years ago maybe. It's been awhile.

You don't need to "keep track" to enjoy a gotm and "submit a score". Just play it for enjoyment and submit the final save and your final date and Firaxis score. The Jason score is calculated for you. It needs no other inputs and uses a modified calculation to normalise different playing styles and reduce the benefit of milking. By conforming to the rules and submitting you'll find out how your style compares with others. If you keep track of key events and decisions you may get more insight into why your game result differs from others by reading the spoilers, but you can get as much or as little as you want out of the game.
