A couple years ago I bought Microsoft Office 2003 Student Edition. I'd like to save a few bucks when I buy my next laptop and not have to buy Office again, or have it bundled.

Will my current Office suite install on a new Vista computer?

the student bundle will usuially (i might be wrong) enable you to install this 3 times.

if you did that, youre busted.
if not it might work.

you can also try out, FOR FREE, OPEN OFFICE
its open source, application bundle that can do spreadsheets, documents and presentations.

I doubt that. I have an Academic licensed version of Visual Studio 2005 Standard, and can't find any such limitation in its terms/EULA.

MS Academic licensing is for far more than just poor students - it applies to schools, teachers, school administration, boards of education, even public museums - people & places who won't tolerate such an abitrary restriction.
