Question About Resources

This may seem noobish, but I've been playing Civ for a long time and never understood something about resources. When you are trading with someone and you mouseover one of their resources that you do not have, it says "+1" Hammer, or "+1" Food.

What does this bonus actually give? It seems to have literally no effect on my cities. Anyone know?

This is the bonus you have when working the plot with the ressource (unimproved). After improving you will get a additional Bonus from the improvement. It gives nothing to your cities.

The stuff showing in Trade-, City-, etc. Screens is uncleen design/programming which does achieve nothing but confusing players (You are not the first to ask btw.)

I actually bought all copper and iron I could get just to get those hammers...

Well, ok, with Mining Inc you might actually get some hammers out of it. But that has nothing to do with the listed bonus
