Ok,

For quite some time now, i have noticed that those workers have a mind of their own when it comes to building roads. Very often they make my roads cross over each other or get an X form ...... they just can't ever make a straight and nice looking road.

My question:

Is there a way to make straight roads to connect my cities.

I find those zig zag roads aweful.

Thank you for your replies.

With the hex pattern there are often multiple pathways that are the same length between cities; some may lead to the x/knot configurations others may not.

Some tips:

Don't turn on automated workers until late game when theres nothing much left for them to be done. One thing that happends late game however is that they will build railroads everywhere which isn't always necessary for puppets.

Wait to construct roads until it makes economic sense to do so. See the thread on trade routes for that info.

When you conquer territory pillage unecessary roads built previously by your conquered foes.

Automated workers = BAD.

There are numerous threads on this if you want to search for more reading on it, but basically, automated workers do way too many stupid things that result in them dying, building horrible road networks (or lack thereof), and much more silliness.

In short, manually assign them, or expect a lot of silliness.

I used to automate workers in 4, but due to poor programming, it's not worth it in 5. Frankly, I find managing workers less tedious and more interesting in 5 than I did in 4 anyway. This goes double in NiGHTS.

No, i do not automate them :)

I click on my worker inside my capital, then I click the road icon, then click on the city I want the road to connect to. Off they go building that road, very often right in the middle of that connected road i notice that they gave it an X form or sometimes an 8 form. Makes my roads look ugly :)

How do you guys make straight roads then ??

Should I click on the tiles one at a time until it reaches it's destination ??

I'm not totaly sure of what your problem is.

If your workers build the roads on the wrong tile (the tile that you don't want a road to be built on), you have to move them to the right tile and build them one by one. When you use the option to automaticaly connect a road to another city, they will build it where they want (usualy the quicker path), but not necesseraly the best strategic option.

If your problem is that your roads sometimes forms ugly patterns, (too many roads instead of a simple intersection in the shape of a cross), there's unfortunatly nothing you can do about that. Just keep in mind that there can only be 1 road per tile, so even it it seems that there are many roads, that is only visual and it will never cost you more maintenance.

The way I get around this problem is to use the auto road building feature but only click on a nearby destination (1 to 3 hexes away). That way I don't have to micromanage every hex and the road will still end up where I want it. With a little practice you can learn how far away to click the destination before the worker will screw up in a given situation.

Makes sense. I will try building my roads one or two tiles at a time and see how it goes.

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful.

Just build every roud manual

it would be good if the game showed u the proposed road path before it actually built it, much like moving a unit over multiple turns

If you got a great person or a manual worker in the way, the optimal route might be blocked so he builds an even worse road.

Just do not use automated workers at all. Luckyly controlling workers in Civ V is much more fun than in previous Civ games.

Never automate your workers!

I allow them to build 2 or occasionally 3 hexes of road or railway sometimes, when I see there is nothing for them that is silly, but other than that, always tell them what to do... (same rule applies to Civ 4, as they were even worse there, as they would build roads everywhere, anywhere that hadn't a road, they'd build one!).

There is nothing you can do to get straight roads.

That's just the way the game designers programmed it. They thought it would be cool if roads looked like the freeway interchanges I have outside my front door. Trust me, they are ugly too!

Yesssss, got it :) Took me some time but i finally managed to get all my roads straight. You need to micro manage them and there is the odd occasion where they stuff up if there is more than two roads on the same tile, but then i just make them do the third road on a different path.

One key thing i noticed is try and connect various roads to your capital on different hexes, using one hex to connect too many roads make the workers go nuts :)

Never auto workers, instead use 2 at a time if you can to make roads.

Worker1 done roading for 2 turns, move one tile further, start another road. Then worker2 get to the unfinished road and completes it. Then he scurries away infront of worker1 and starts another road. Works only on flat tiles though, not forests or hills.

Saves some nice turn in a big country. :)
