In another thread in this forum you posted the registry and civ.ini files from your game (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?threadid=23938). I read them and they are different than my own. I don't know if that makes a difference or is in any way part of my problem but thought I'd inquire nonetheless. FYI, my civ.ini file says:
[Civilization 2000]
WhereAmI=c:\mps\civ2
WhereIsCD=f:\civ2
Herald Warning Shown=1
WinG=Installed
VFW=Installed
Language Preference=1
Window Name=Sid Meier's Civilization II
[Civilization Gold]
Herald Warning Shown=1
Window Name=Civilization II Multiplayer Gold
Whereas your says:
[Civilization Gold]
Herald Warning Shown=1
Window Name=Civilization II Multiplayer Gold
NetTimeOut=30
Adapter=0
INTERNET Timeout=60
ChatShowSize=8192
Does it matter at all that they are different, or are they supposed to be as we may be running differing OS? :confused:

The file of mine was created when I installed the program from the original CD. I have not tinkered with it since it was created.

The .INI files and the registry contents accomplish the same function in an OS.... they set parameters and pass info at startups.

None of the contents of my .INI look particularly critical, but I have not tested them by altering them.... everything runs just great.

In my registry entries, the X: refers to my CD location. However, most of the time that CD ROM is physically disconnected, and I use a NO-CD patch, which is effectively the same one as Thunderfall posted. If you have multiple CD drives, like I do, and you want the game to look for the CD in a new place, change it in your registry.

Your .INI file seems to have a similar thing ( "WhereIsCD=f:\civ2" ).... did you copy your CD contents to the "f:\civ2" directory?

The bottom line is that the .INI and registry entries customize the behavior of Civ2 on startup, and if you need to change the behavior, then that's when you should alter them.

:)

The [Civilization 2000] section are the settings for the "classic" Civ2. Starlifter doesn't have that (right?), only MGE, so he doesn't have those settings.
The [Civilization Gold] settings are for MGE. I'm guessing starlifter has played multiplayer games, and you haven't.
All the settings he has in there and you don't are relevant only for multiplaying. Those settings will probably be added automatically once you play a multiplayer game.

Right. I can now play Civ 2 Classic since I have installed Cedric Greene's great Downgrade patch, but I have never installed an original Civ 2 Classic on my machine.

Actually, I've created some MP games to see how it works, but not played MP games. But evidently the game updates the .INI file when you start using the MP functions.

Thanks, Mercator! :)
