Question on Austrin upgrades

Let me start by saying what a wonderful Modmod you have created... absolutely love it!

Have just discovered the Austrin Civ (wanted to try a charismatic/adaptive>arcane Civ) and found their Explorers quite valuable (esp. with Mob. I & II). But now is the time to turn them into Trackers etc. and I don't see how...

Trackers don't need special buildings such as their Ranger-counterparts and merely researching Archery should get me to upgrade my Explorers. I have done that and can now build new Trackers, but I can't upgrade my experienced Explorer-units. What am I missing?

but, he says he can build trackers, just not upgrade to them. maybe the explorers are not in the BFC of a city with the explorers' guild ( I think you need that for trackers ) ?

I think you have to make then Sentries first.

Never mind, I confused the Austrin troop tree with something else. Weird problem, are you playing with any modmodmods?

The only things I can think of are that you are either too far from a city with an explorers' guild or you are out of money. But in the latter case, you should see the upgrade icon greyed out.

Not sure if this means the same as the OP, but I also noticed that the Austrins can't upgrade their recon units all the way. Specifically, I found no unit that could upgrade to a Beastmaster, definitely not the Tracker.

Makes no sense to me, an explorer civilization that can't upgrade to the highest rank.

I looked in the Civopedia and there is no upgrade path there either, so it doesn't look like a bug ... maybe a design mistake?

I had a look in the xml. Trackers are unitclasss_ranger, and explorers should be able to upgrade to unitclass_ranger. So unless something is wrong there, it should work.

However, trackers can upgrade to longbowmen or asassins. not beastmasters. I'd definitely say there's an issue there.

That one is deliberate - the Austrin Recon line aren't Hunter/Ranger/Beastmaster (animal/nature based) but more of a survivalist explorer. They can still gain Beastmasters, but will be building them from scratch. I do plan to do some more work on their Archery/Assassin lines however to really make the point.

Basically their early recon units can upgrade to become different units to the recon units of other civs - in the case of Tracker -> Recurve Archer, they actually switch UnitCombat as well, allowing for an interesting combination of promotions if the unit has been following its intended role of exploring/surviving for long enough to gain them.

Wouldn't it be moire logical to give them some sort of Beastmaster UU, that doesn't have much to do with beasts? And enable trackers to upgrade into that instead (or as well)

Maybe a "Wanderer" unit. With the emphasis on combat prowess, and mobility.

I was thinking about that after posting last night. I'm actually going to add an additional unit (not Beastmaster replacement) somewhere in the tech tree that remains Recon/Wanderer styled that can be upgraded to from the Trackers.

That actually means additional National Units in the recon-line, but still means that you can build Beastmasters. Given that things like Trackers require archery (and thematically the Austrin favour fast firing bows), I'll likely add some ranged attacks to various units.
